Riley's previous schooling consisted of 12 years at the School for the Blind in Ogden and three years of high school in Moab He didn't enjoy the blind atmosphere at the school in Women Support Women" on Friday February 19 1988 The Activity Center Alumni Room Keele was selected for the recognition because of her exem- Ogden currently runs an honors progran at Brigham Young University She is one of three alumni "The world is not a blind environment They didn’t teach Riley doesn't read books he listens to them He receives novels on tape from the National Library of Congress He also listens to music his favorites are Lynard Skynard Rush Fresh Aire and any type of "new jazz’ Support of Women lecture set members who will be honored for bp-hal- f talk is being sponsored by Campus Women Together Ms Keele a CEU alumna their support and accomplish- 0161115 annual CEU y 0 10 Student plary contributions to the field of education and continuing service to church and communtiy In her presentation Keele will (continued on page 8) Father Bill Wassmuth a Catholic priest from Cocur d'Alene Idaho came to CEU on January 28 to speak out against the Aryan Nations and promote human rights The Aryan Nations is a white separatist supremist organization that hopes to acquire Idaho Ore- gon Montana Washington and Wyoming in order to develop this area into an all white neo-nahomeland Fr Wassmuth came from a small town in Idaho to Cocur d'Alene in 1979 In 1984 he was asked to be chairperson of The Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations Fr Wassmuth is devoted to helping people become aware of the Aryan threat "In the last 10-1-3 years our society has grown apathetic about the issue of human rights" Fr Wassmuth said "we must be constantly vigilant about this zi issue" Richard Butler the foremost Aryan leader moved to Cocur d'Alene in 1970 as head of the Church of Jesus Christ Christian Aryan Nations (the political name) In 1974 Butler set up his compound north of Cocur d'Alene at Hayden Lake Harrassement soon started Swastikas were painted on the sjsrsxr were made to children of a racially mixed family People soon got together and voiced oppostion to the Aryan Nations The malicious harass ment law was upgraded from a misdemeanor to felony In 1983 The Order which is an extremely violent offshoot of the Aryan Nations was convicted of numerous accounts of racial violence Fr Wassmuth explained that the Aryan Nations hope to acquire control of the five Pacific Northwest states by terrorism overpopulation of white separatist people and an amendment requiring an individual to be 78 Aryan to gain citizenship Fr Wassmuth confronted the Aryan idea of isolationism saying that "we need to work together as human beings on this planet now that we have the power to destroy it" "They feel driven by a crazy theology" Fr Wassmuth remarked about the Aryan Nations and continued by explaining the Aryan's beliefs that they are the chosen race and that Jesus Christ was Aryan in 1986 a rally was staged to show that the five Pacific Northwest states did not support the Aryan Nations This rally attracted extensive media coverage and people became aware of the |
