Show PRESIDENT CANNON AT REST last tribute of I 1 aid to the sage ot the cl arch the cortege which followed the re mains of president geo Q cannon to their lat resting place in the city cemetery at salt lake wednesday was a mile in length and its passage was witnessed by 20 people no like event in the history of the city drew a large throng available foot of standing room in the tabernacle was occupied and it is estimated that from 10 to 11 people listened to the simple ex in honor of the departed leader on the outside filling all the walks and overflowing upon the lawns unable to gain admission straining to hear what was going on inside was an other multitude which extended through the eates and into the street tl e floral tributes were the most beautiful and elaborate ever witnessed in the city and came from all parts of the country the services began at 12 clock and lasted for two hours during chih time there was scarcely a whisper th people had met to do honor to the memory of their leader and with solemnity they did it the casket waa brought to the tabernacle from the house in cannon ward soon after 11 clock accompanied by members of the family and several close friends and was conveyed to the raised place on the communion table by the twelve apostles who acted as pallbearers throughout the scene as viewed from the auditorium was a most beau ticul one the casket was literally covered with flowers of many kinds and surrounded by borne of the hand bolest set pieces ever ei in the west following out the i lea tl at 1 e had eo often expressed in life here was no bomber color used in the decorations all being white and cream color the fee being caught up by white cord and and the b g beds of white enlivened by green plants and flowers there was a ve large attendance of the leaders of the church all the various organizations being well depre belted president joseph F smith conducted the services which began promptly on time they were opened by the choir and congregation singing god moves in a mysterious way apostle F M lyman offered the opening prayer apostle george teasdale spoke n be half of the sunday schools of which deceased was the principal founder heber J grant spoke in behalf of the M M I 1 A professor brimhall of the brigham young academy of provo ostle brig ang friend ship existing between himself and president cannon joseph t smith second counselor paid a high tribute to the worth of his associate apostles henry smith and john W taylor praised the integrity and loyalty of the deceased joseph F smith stated that president snow had requested him to say that on account of the condition of his health he had thought it best not to speak he had written out some remarks which would be read by his eon lerol snow the presidents appearance indicated the feebleness of his health he sat through the service with his overcoat and muffler on and his face teemed pale and haggard his address was as follows SNOW S my brethren sisters and friends feeling tay inability because of health to speak to you this afternoon and yet unwilling that this opportunity should pass without expressing some ot my feelings on this momentous ion I 1 have written some of my thoughts I 1 have read with deep interest the various papers published in thin uty and elsewhere testifying of the nobility the greatness the virtues abilities and fine intellect that have won the high honors conferred upon president george Q cannon I 1 heartily approve of all these sentiments and further I 1 wish to of him more particularly in the character ot my first counse or it was said and thought by some when I 1 selected him for this position that his long experience in serving as counselor to president taylor and afterwards to president woodruff would naturally incline him to as bume at times a little arrogance or sell ienco but I 1 wish it to be distinctly under stood that no one in my position ever had a counselor ano displayed less 0 such a spirit or disposition in our councils whatever might be the matter under cons aeration de ration although my decision was sometimes opposed to his views he invariably yielded his point grace fully and gave me his most loyal support our business relations were always most amicable and our private associations most pleasant inspired by a sincere friendship that was affectionate and endearing in brief I 1 never could wish or hope more respectful faithful or loving counselor and friend I 1 say to the bereaved ones a great and might spirit has departed a noble and devoted hus band a wise and tender parent true coun beelor brother and friend ha left us and yet you have no occasion to mourn he is now re in the midst 0 the great and mighty in the spirit world you have something to do have everything to do in one immediate you direction prepare to meet him and share in his glory the time Is fleeting the days a numbered therefore walk in his toot stel live in his spirit eel that he Is nearby and not tar away that he Is still watching over you and even more strictly than when in your midst it may seem strange and yet it Is true the completeness of his exaltation and glory meas curably depends upon yourselves therefore cease to mo rn and rejoice that prospects are made BI glorious services at the grave were simple consisting of the rendition of come ye disconsolate after which the cas ket was lowered into the grave apos tie lund dedicated the grave saying he believed the world was better be cause the deceased had lived in it and beseeching the most high to protect the sacred spot from the vandal hand of man and the fury of the elements when the swallows homeward fly followed and then bishop winder at the request of colonel john Q can non briefly thanked the people pres ent and others for the kindly canites lations of sympathy and assured them that every act and every word was fully appreciated the grave was then filled and the mound covered with floral offerings but it was over an hour before all who were present had dispersed many be ing anxious to more closely inspect the beautiful tributes |
