Show APPORTIONMENT BILLS 0 Houso Committee on Census Begins I Consideration I Washington I Dec 15The House Committee on Census began its consideration con-sideration of the reapportionment bill I today and by a vote of six to five expressed I I ex-pressed a preference for leaving the representation of the House of Representatives Repre-sentatives at 357 as at present This vote was not considered n finality however a several members were not I present but was taken nominally as n preliminary test of the sentiment ot members There are a number of bills before the committee but the main discussion turned on the Hopkins bill keeping the total of the House as at present and the Burlelgh bill increasing the total The vote was taken on this issue between be-tween leaving the House as at present or Increasing without reference to any particular bill In order to permit absent ab-sent members to be present and vote lliecommltlee adjourned until 2 oclock t1c Monday Chairman Hopkins says I he hopes n favorable report will be ngieed upon at that tlmeln which case I ngI lp Will report the bill at once and en deavor to take it up in the House next Tuesday The advocates of Increasing the membership mem-bership of the House do not consider the vote of today n in any way decisive de-cisive as one of the absent members was quoted at the meeting as favorable I to an increase and the other absent tte member le said to be doubtful but rather inclined to an Increase After Inclned the ote had been taken today those seeking an increase moved an adjournment I adjourn-ment In order to postpone llnal action They succeeded In this carrying the adjournment against the wishes of those favorable to leaving the representation repre-sentation as at present The change sentaton was os by the arrival of Mr Russell Rus-sell Conn who did not however express ex-press his views for or against an increase in-crease |
