Show o DAILY UTAH STATE JOURNAL, SKETCH ALTON POSSIBLE OF JUDGE B. PARKER DEMOCRATIC DENTIAL NOMINEE. PRESI- Navar Baan Beatan Who and What Polla tha Ha la. A Man Who Ha at In view of the rerent atuteinenta by Grover Cleveland and alao standard bearer of the the twice by Demm-ratiparty, William J. Bryan, announcing in emphatic terms their determination not to be considered as r democratic presidential candidates next year, there npiiear as the most conspicuous iMssiblities on the political hnrlxwi, Senator Arthur Pue Gorman of Maryland and Chief Judge Alton Brooks Parker of the New York court of appeals. Senator dnrmnn's career Is well known. Beginning ns a page in the United States senate he ultimately became a distinguished member of that distinguished body. He has been a national figure for a great many years and is easily today the field marshal of the democratic party. As chuirman of the democratic national committee he twice piloted Mr. Cleveland Judge Parker, although a conspicuous figure In the stute of New York and chief Judge of the court of appeals, which Is recognised by lawyers everywhere as the most linportunt court of last resort in the country the United States supreme court alone excepted is not so well known beyond the confines of his native stute. What sort of a man he is personally, hew he is regarded professionally and politically, what his career has been and what may be expected of him are naturally interesting questions. A present resident of Ogden took the two yours' course with Judge Parker ia the low department of Union University. or what Is belter known as the Albany law school, and was admitted to the supreme court at the same time. He has kept in touch with his career ever since. He says that during the attendance at the law school Alton B. Parker while having a pleasing personality, wna of a retiring disposition, and took no prominent part in the moot court debates and nqver made any attempt at display. This has been characteristic of him through life. Notwithstanding all the success he has attained, it eannot be said of him that he pushed himself forward. He has always been known to be true to his friends. He is the very reverse of strenuousi" he is an excellent listener, easily approached and thoroughly democratic in his munner. Judge Parker was born in the village of Cortland, Cortland county. New York, a small place midway between Syracuse and Binghamton, May 14. 1851. Up to the time he was twelve years of age he lived on his father's farm, attending the district school in the winter. From the nge of thirteen to the age of fifteen he attended the Cortland academy. For four years after that he taught school at Virgil, and Rochester and saved money enough to enable him to take the law course at Albuny, above spokBlng-,bampt- on en of. The faculty at the AlbHny law school, at that time, consisted of such men as States Senator Iru Harris, of the court of uppeals, Selden Judge Prof. Edwards, whose text hooks on commercial law are In almost every law library in the United States, and John T. Hoffman, at that time governor of New York. He graduated in April. 1872, Just five years after the late President McKinley graduated from the same institution, and on the 9th day of May was admitted to practice before the general term of the supreme court which was composed of Justices Theodore Miller, Platt Potter, and John M. Parker. Soon after his admission to the bar he entered the law office of Schoonmak-e- r & Hardeubergh at Kingston, Ulster county. Mr. Sehoomnnker was at that time attorney general of the state. The first office to which Judge Parker was elected was that of surrogate of Ulster county, si tioMltlon known in the western states ns probate Judge. From time immemorial Ulster county has been a Republican county, and yet Judge Parker was elected two terms on the Democratic ticket by Large majorities. lie wus subsequently appointed to the supreme court bench by Gov. David B. Hill to fill the vacancy by the death of Thsxiderlc It Westbrook. He then received the nomination for the full term of twelve years and was elected without opposition, the Republicans putting up no candidate. In 1897 he was elected chief Judge of the court of appeals for the term of fourteen years. It may be remarked, In passing, that uot only has he ed occas-slon- ed never been defeated for Hay office, but he has run ahead of liis ticket every time he has been a candidate. In 1884 he was a delegate to the Democratic Grover convention which nominated Cleveland. With the election of Mr. Cleveland. David U. Hill became governor to fill the vacancy, and in 1883 wus a candidate for Judge Parker was at this time chairman of the executive state committee of the Democratic committee and. after much persuasion and against his will, became Governor Hills manager of the cumiuiign, and it was an open secret at that time that it was largely due to Judge Parkers superior knowledge of the state and his personal efforts that Mr, Hill was elected by a plurality of 11,009. In 1S89, wlille on the supreme court bench. Judge Parker was appointed by Governor Hill to sit as u judge In the second division of the court of appeals, at that time being only thirty-eigyears of age, where he remained until that branch of the court wus dissolved, after which he was appointed by Governor Flower a member of the general term of the supreme court of ht TO SIB THOMAS LIPTON PRESENTED WITH ELABORATE SILVER SERVICE. al Now Now j New I That Turkey : t (Successors to) Skeen, .Burrows ft Co. and G.
