More and more men and women are investing money wisely and safely, with an eye to security and steady earnings rather than possible profits. They are determined that when their earning period has passed, they will spend their declining years in comfort provided by their own foresight when young. U. S. This work has produced excellent results-probabl- y other federal farm relief activity has been so no successful. Unfortunately, this has led to a danger that seems to be an inescapable part of all government ventures of the kind. A certain percentage of farmers have come to look upon the government as their economic savior to believe that it, and it alone, will iron out their troubles, solve their problems and bring them prosperity. The farmers who hold to this belief are obviously going to do little in their own behalf. He said hundreds of young people in the state are looking for homes but cannot find a place to go because sufficient irrigated land is not available. He said the saturation point of the available water supply in Utah was reached 20 years ago, but now we have plenty of land but not sufficient water for it. Professor Peterson offered a program for the increase and preservation of irrigation water: 1. The sealing of leaky canals. He pointed out that canals over sandy ground resulted in the loss and waste of an enormous amount of water. 2. The elimination of parallel canals. He stated that one good cemented canal would carry much more water and save 25 per cent. He said we have our high water in May and June while our greatest need of water is in July and August. He said we must build numerous small reservoirs to preserve the flood waters. 3. We must do better irrigating. He said we had a demonstration of this last year during the drouth when irrigators got along with 60 per cent of the usual amount of water by cleaning irrigation ditches and conserving what water they had. 4. from the other streams.
