Show FARM RELIEF from the american economist Econom iq no one denies that the farmers fanner of tho the country are not prospering ng as they should it is not strange that they lare are looking about for some avenue of relief the avenues of relief hae been pointed out flom timo time to time by I 1 the american economist to seek a remedy for any undesirable condition it is always proper to wk the cause the causes of the pre ent predicament of the farmers go back to the world war the administration urged the farmers to sow soa wheat and yet more wheat what was not the only farm product hoce increase was as insisted upon but it was the most important one the farmers farmen responded especially when the administration fixed the price of wheat everybody knew that it would pay to raise wheat at the price thus fixed fied consequently the acreage which aluch was planted to wheat was increased large areas of hitherto uncultivated land being broken and sown in addition to the substitution of wheat heat for other crops prior to the outbreak of the tha war the wheat acreage in this country had nener neer reached and had equalled equal led the CO mark only six times in our history but due mostly to the insistence of the administration and the guarin tv price fixed by it the number of acres planted to wheat exceeded in 1910 the bear ear the war ar ended since that time me the farmers farmen of the country lia hae e sow sov ed on the oner oer acres of wheat per ann annum imin 1920 ne v e exported 13 9 percent per cent of the w uneit hait rai raided eft in this thib counte the reason maso n being that the production of heat in foreign countries count nes had been largely presented preen ted during the ivar ar and thoc count countries nes hall had not et had time to reco er since that near ear the percentage of exportation his rapidly decreased bm mccaue abie of the fact that foreign countries hio hino been returning to their fornier former products lt one of the main causes of the agricultural depiction cion har bas been oer production with a breith greith indrea increased ed production and a failing foreign market depre depression alon was axa to hac been expected As we e b hie A e iid aid N wheat heat NN vis is not the anin farm product which bich has suffered ered in much the came ame wa a anti and for ci baue the farmers of the giedt 1 liddle wet would hae been ible able to bear up with nith the overproduction and the falling off in demand demand except for another situation growing out of the conditions condition during the war nar we refer to the great increase in farm prices prices pieces which could be justified only if con options were ere to remain as they then nee land which had forni formerly fornieri erl been held at per acre found read ale at an acre and land held beld at an acre was as sold at or an acre and in a few cases at een more nor was tas that all not h hiving tv the cash with which to by the purchasers mortgaged their purchaser cibin increasing the mortgage on land they had previously owned the bankers who made the loans vere nere a as much astray astran as were nere the farmers them the elies and the n result nult was nas that a large proportion of the farm land N was as mortgaged 0 the result has been failures among the farmers inho aho hae lot lost their land and aum failures among the banks inho ho h hive te been unable to realize in their securities aties these theme are the conditions aich have tn made ade the farm problem of the middle wet one of national import importance arim what amounted to price ance fixing was ras one of the great couse of the pre ent farm piO problem bIern to remedy that condition ma have hae proposed the policy which caused it it reminds us of the old nursery rhyme there i was as a man in our town and he be was nas NN won on dorous hiie avi c ile he jumped into a bramble bush and scratched out both his eyes eye and when he found his ekes ees were out with all his might and main he jumped into another bush and watched them in again secretary of the treasury mellon has ha pointed out the f fallacy of the price fixing plan as have bae other prominent I 1 men we will not aftem attempt t to 0 repeat his clear exposition of the folly I 1 of price ance fixing fiting what we ne do want to point out is that the ultimate e remedy ed must be adequate tariff protection and a curtailment of production even the present rate of duty on wheat and other farm fann products I 1 is s in abc from juh 1 1925 tolIaN to ma 29 a period of 11 months we ne ban have e imported from canada bushels of cheat both free and auti i able that is at the rate of nearly one and one half million buhel pr per month of the total amount 13 93 bushels nere ere imported import ea in I 1 bond on dut fre to be ground here and ex e ported in the form of flour in direct h e c competition with flour milled from american produced wheat heat had the millers instead of buying canadian M heat and bringing it itin in free of duty been forced to pay lute thereon they bould instead have haie bought milled d and exported american wheat heat what the farmers need is a higher protective tariff not a lower lonner one as free traders claim there is too much humbug in the milling of wheat in bond and the facts should be carefully inquired into it is possible that th the bonding privilege be repealed rep aled entirely or at lm fo t greatly modified to lower the tariff on manufactured products would hurt the home market for farm products by throwing the w or kinen out of employment wholesale prices are not really lugh high retail prices are higher than is equitable in all too man many instances in any e event ent the higher prices are on those products which auch are free of duty the remedy for overproduction is di versification true there are oc ec eions of the country ft here abere the opportunities I 1 tuni ties for diversification are not great but there is no section in w m aich t the he opportunities are choll lacking T to a great creat extent the fato of the farmers banners 1 lies I es within their own hanti W what h at the neel need is 19
