It's been a while since we honored the Moab Valley's animals, and — clearly we've expanded our definition once again. This issue we honor LUCKY, the American Bison that lives on Spanish Valley Drive with a small herd that bears a striking resemblance to their caretaker, ROBIN GROFF. And what makes LUCKY so lucky? The luck of the draw... ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE SPEERS EFFECT. The Portal Tram is no more. Ten years after the tram was proposed, built, sold, sold again, its new owners, THE NATURE CONSERVANCY, hired salvage crews to remove the eyesore. In one Saturday morning, the tram was gone. Jennifer Speers started a trend when she tore dow that house... ANYTHING's possible What makes a COYOTE RU N? ...Oh things like urban sprawl, habitat encroachment. A permanent human population. Coyotes were prolific in this area ten years ago. They may still be active today, if not in as great the numbers. But check back with us in a decade or so. Today the orchards. Tomorrow...? THE LAST ORCHARD TREE ON 500 WEST? Fifth West was once Orchard Alley. But condos have taken care of most of them. Last week | saw this brave but bedraggled apple tree, hanging on for dear life, as new construction and heavy equipment surrounded it. Despite severe neglect, she was still loaded with fruit.
