NEW YORK, Aug. 22 ttIE Charlie Grimm's "kid team" The Chicago Cubs came to the polo grounds today for a 4-game series with the New York Giants, clinging tenaciously to pennant hopes. The Cubs, in third place, are 4 games behind the leading Giants and are slowly losing ground. In the lost column, where it hurts the most, the Cubs are 7 games behind the Giants. During their eastern trip the Cubs have broken even, winning five and losing five. They have muffed wonderful opportunities to gain on both the Giants and Cardinals, who lead them by one game, by blowing close games. Four out of the five they have dropped in the east have been by one run. Mostly Kids Experts have wondered all season sea-son how Grimm has been keeping the Cubs, a team of youngsters and mediocre pitchers up in the running. Only four players on the squad are over 27 - Root, 36, Hartnett, 35, Klein, 30, and Carle-ton, Carle-ton, 29. Mistakes of the youngsters young-sters in critical moments have proved costly but their flaming enthusiasm and refusal to quit perhaps has more than made up for their blunders. "If I can keep this gang within 3 games of the top when we get back home for a 24-day home stand you are going to see some real batting for the pennant," said Grimm. Winning Streak Last time the Cubs were home they won 23 out of 26 games, including in-cluding four straight from the Giants. Slate. Pitchers The Cubs were in an angry mood for the opener after tossing away yesterday's first game to the Phillies. They were out in front 10-4 only to lose 13-12 through sloppy relief hurling by Henshaw and Carleton. Making no mistakes about the second game, the Cubs clouted out 19 hits to win, 19-5. The Giants held their 3-game lead over the Cards by nosing out the Reds, 3-0, in a pitchers' battle bat-tle between Schumacher and Schott. Schumacher won his 17th game and broke a 3-game losing streak. Dizzy Dean won his 21st game in pitching the Cards to a 13-3 victory over the Boston Braves. Gemmeli club, first-half champion cham-pion in the Utah Industrial league, sounded a warning to the Provo Timps, who are on top of the second half race, when it defeated de-feated the Magna-Garfield team 8-6 Wednesday. Wednesday's victory placed the Gemmeli club just a half game behind the Provo Timps, who are facing a tough assignment Saturday Sat-urday afternoon when they journey jour-ney to Salt Lake to meet the Hol sum Bakers. A Provo loss Saturday and a Gemmeli victory Gemmeli meets the Royal Bakers at Bingham would put the first half winners on top. Holsum Bakers and the U. S. Mines battled desperately to surpass sur-pass each other in the league standing in the only other Wednesday Wed-nesday game. For ten innings the two teams battled strenuously strenuous-ly but when the sun set over the copper camp the two teams were deadlocked a 5-5. It was the third game this half to end in a tie.
