The Roaring Twenties were winding down, George Bush was a pre-schooler, Herbert Hoover had just moved into the White House, and on Wall Street, The Crash was just around the corner. That was July 15, 1929. This year--3,126 weekly programs later-the isvorld-renowned choir observes its 60th Anniversary in radio with a special commemorative show. It will air live on Sunday, July 16, at 9:30 a.m. (MDT), originating on KSL in Salt Lake City and carried on the CBS Radio network. "The show has had a longer continuous con-tinuous run than any other program pro-gram in American network radio history," says choir president Wendell Smoot. When it first aired, America was singing "Stardust," and "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" and reading Hemingway's "A Farewell Fare-well to Arms." On the silver screen those newfangled "talkies" were the rage. There was no NFL, nor NBA, but Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics were enroute to the World Series baseball title, and just weeks before the choir's radio debut, the Kentucky Derby was won by a horse with the unlikely name of Clyde Van Dusen. On the international hont, Hitler had yet to take-over Germany, and World War II, Koreaind Vietnam were all warsof lhe future when KSL announcer Ted " Kimball climbed a tall stepladder to reach the only microphone the station Jiad at the time. " KSL temporarily went off the air while the microphone was rushed from the studio to the Tabernacle a block away. It was positioned high above the floor so it could collect the voices from the choir loft and the only way the announcer could speak into it was by scaling the ladder. "The choir's repertoire runs the gamut from sacred and classical to patriotic and popular," says musical musi-cal director Jerold Ottley. All of the 300-plus singers are members of the sponsoring Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They are doctors, lawyers, farmers, nurses, businessmen, secretaries, homcmak-ers, homcmak-ers, barbers and salesmen, among other occupations. They sing without with-out pay, says Ottley, yet there is a waiting list of applicants hoping to fill periodic vacancies. Choir members must be at least 30 years Boy Scout Poiv-wow The Hobble Creek Boy Scouts of America will sponsor their semiannual semi-annual Merit Badge Pow-Wow next month starting August 19 at the Springville High School, 9a.m. until noon. The pow-wow will run for three Saturdays including August 19 and 26 and September 9. Labor Day weekend will be excluded. 16 different dif-ferent badges will be offered to all registered Boy Scouts and each boy will be asked to pick three. AfeeofS2willbechargedandthe payment of the fee will be on the first Saturday. Registration forms are available from the boys' Scoutmaster, district dis-trict officials and Advancement Committee Members. The boys are asked to register by calling Art Florence at 489-7074. Merit badges being offered include: in-clude: sports, nature, athletics, first aid, pets, insect study, personal management, environmental science, sci-ence, Indian lore, signaling, fish and wildlife management, emergency preparedness, orienteering, safety and space exploration. Boys may call any time until August 11 to register. of age and must retire at age 60 or after 20 years in the choir, whichever which-ever comes first. Women singers currently outnumber outnum-ber the men 170 to 141, according to Josephene Foulgcr, the choir historian. The singers come from 42 separate Utah communities, and one of 18 husband-wife tandems travels 160 miles twice a week for rehearsals and broadcasts. The humble beginnings of 1929 have, thus, resulted in a broadcast now heard by millions. They and their singing cohorts comprise an ensemble which U.S. presidents have called "a national institution" and which has earned the nickname of "America's Choir." But your children need to work and to be responsible. You give them much when you give them responsibility, for it teaches them to handle life and to be self-sufficient. self-sufficient. Many problems today can be blamed on the fact that too many people have not learned responsibility. Photo & Text-David Bly ...
