and attention and aid who are at this time budding buddin as it we were re unseen bir by the coarse and rude gaze ofa of a corrupt world I 1 ask sk your aid and sympathies while this bud is now bursting I 1 forth in its pristine beat beauty ity and which is generally called in the world as delivering my maiden speech friends friend and in this word I 1 breathe a sentence full fall of warmth and feeling and no greater word is written in the catalogue of expression it is a privilege of which I 1 feel justly brou prou proul i and I 1 will endeavor to merit your continued good will fellow the busy stage and scene of action but the wheels of time have bave so rolled on that now they are numbered with the dead with ifie be dead dd adl I 1 say yes with the most illustrious of those hose who lived in ge the cent century try and who are the persons who slept forth on the memorable ath of july 1776 is a question which has been answered by men of every grade of political i lea I 1 a and nd re religious 1 ig ioui opinion to suit their own ree feelings lingg tastes or whims aw and in as great a variety of ways as there is expression in the minds of men but how do we as a people look upon those men is a question asked by some som portions of american citizens who are unacquainted with our feelings feeling sy and know not the depth of or sentiment which is implanted in the bosoms of you my hearers and can T I 1 a are mere stripling dare 1 I set forth an infinite em portion of the feelings of this people ip in regard I 1 to the remembrance of those men yea yesa for that purpose have I 1 forth in weakness and bear with me I 1 pray you a few moments while I 1 breathe forth a few sentences on that subject when my thoughts flow back to the remembrance i 0 of the signers of the or even the aged stephen I 1 r en hopkins whose trembling hand hidi indicates cates that he was nigh three score years and ten teil and was verg ing on the brink of the grave 1 I am carried back sf still ill further into the vata viata of time and that it was not a company of men simply gathered from 13 different colonies upon a pleasure excursion or that they had met even upon a mere business busai ess transaction but they bad met upon a more solemn occasion and that was to throw off the heavy burdens that had been placed arvi themi them by the patent parent government nol no friends and fellow citizens those men were moved upon by an visible invisible bandy the eye eve of almighty jehovah nad been upon them from froin their birtle and it was hz HB who was the grand cause of their being being gathered together into one room it was HE who ba had moved upon up on their minds spirits and better feelings and had unknown to them brought them together in order that they might lay the foundation for a free and independent I 1 government in which his people should be guaranteed the privilege of worshipping wor shipping god according to the dictates of their own consciences encis how did those veterans launch forth in language which must ever command the admiration of all mankind almost the first words which they uttered wert were all men are created equal equall they tha are endows endowed by their creator with certain ma inalienable iena e rights 1 that amongst these are me liberty and the pursuit of happiness and ana after rev reviewing the grievances under which they were laboring they the solemnly appealed to the supreme judge of the world for the rectitude of their intentions intention and declared that these thee colonies of right ril 1 ought to be bee and independent states here re then is the foundation foan dation laid for tile most glorious confederacy that this earth then bad upon it tor for god in his inife mercy intended that this land should be an asylum for the oppressed c of 9 every nation under the face facok ot the heavens but even this could not be accomplished without the shedding of blood and many were the gallant souls als who ho breathed their last struggling for libei liberty tv that boon which was to be handed banded d down own to the latest generations generation and t that hat blessi blessing fig which ought to fe pe be perpetuated upon the fice face of tile the whole earth af after ter a sang sanguinary binary struggle of 7 years the 13 colonies triumphed and on the sept sent 1787 was ushered to t the e world a constitution which shines as a one of the brightest meteors in m the firmament and chich guaranteed everi everything thing that could be considered dear to lo the most humble individual dwelling on the face of this vast continent some persons may be led to lo enquire and what was that by reading the first article of amendments amendment I 1 find congi ess shall make no lavy lave respecting an establishment jentof of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press what can call be a r gia pledge than this that every man shall have the ki privilege of worshipping wor shipping almighty god according to the dictates of his own conscience and no person allowed to put him in in fear while in in his religious religions worship or to hurt him for his bis religious belief Is there any sect on I 1 the face of the earth excluded from the benefits of the above enactment in in the constitution of the united umed states there is is not the catholic has ahe free toleration of carrying big hia cross emblazoned blazoned em on of his back through the streets and no one ought to ridicule him lm the church of england and every one of the different sects sp there frani are guaranteed safety in their several religious religions i beliefs no maftei how contradictory or inconsistent or foolish they may appear in in the eyes of those who do not believe like them the Maho has the perfect right to laise raise the gilded crescent high up in in the air an and pointing to the heavens cry aloud allah il allah and mahomet is is his prophet having his wives wives contentedly hidden up in in his own dwelling place excluded from the rude gaze as they say of every christian do dopf 0 arid and no one would have the right to invade his breadon bre bread adof of worship in in order older as he believes to appease his wrath or the peruvian he has the right to erect on yonder ensign peak or any of those high towering mountains an altar to the sun whereon to place a fire fi e in order that sweet incense may arise in all its fragrance f and have a number of virgins paraded ansac in sacerdotal eril otal robes of purity to sing the the mountains in in all their varied forms it is is guaranteed guarante id to them by the constitution of the united states and here in in these vallies if no where else on this vast continent they can worship and be protected in in the tree free exercise exercise the thereat reaf then rejoice you my heater hearer you e I 1 that almighty god has again spoken from the heavens restored tile priesthood to the earth and has again organized his church according to his own will you by the same constitution are guaranteed the tree iree exercise thereof 1 for it is expressly written ip in article congress s shall make no law respecting r e an establishment or of religion or prohibit prohibiting in 9 t the we free exercise thereof and know ye this that if any man revile you on account of your religion he is not an american citizen in heart is not subject 0 10 o the glorious constitution of the united states state but he is a tyrant a cral would trample all the rights of aidy any other man under toot foot for not belie DW ing as he doe and further would destroy every vestige of the holy bible and ana that eliat emanates from god in order that he may ret reign agn as one of the princes of darkness in hell forever the fi of speech is not abri abridged aged therefore friends and fellow citizens I 1 stand before you it in boldness knowing that hat the constitution was written by roen men while under t the he inspiration of almighty god they were constrained to make it so firm that evil evi disposed men should not have the power to revoke or nullify if and although the time may mav come that aspiring demagogues may endeavor to nullify the constitution and wint want to exercise a tyrannical power over those who do not believe in tyranny like unto yet jet I 1 have the firm convict conviction i boil tint that yo you fellow citizens who are now dwelling in it the highest altitude in the united states will yet be the ones to untold unfold the broad folds of tile the constitution to the breezer and those who wish to continue to revere that time honored instrument will be glad to have the privilege of frockins kins kinz to the standard fellow citizens this is a broad assertion but look at the secession doctrines that arg are continually hurled burled forth from south carolina hark the preparations for far war the clangor of swords the rattling of musketry the active ive preparations that are making in that unsettled portion of the united states and well may we fear fe arthe I 1 attempts that are bein being 11 made to sit subvert avert the foundation of the most glorious union that ever em blazoned the canopy of earth what ought ato be done then when those discordant sounds salute our ears R illy round the broad ut constitution let union and liberty be served in its jil I 1 immaculate mm a c i isaie purity let fet the afi il union n ion ikic 1 commenced with 13 united diore united in the confederacy of the 31 present states let there be a greater principle of union carried out ont by those who are placed in the balls of congress let the laws before uniform form in their nature and the officer ficera more united in carrying out the principles of 76 1 than they have been for the last several years let them consider they are but the people and a aare are Rie therefore bound to be faithful to 10 them or r t they h j yare are liable 40 be turned out oid of office and then our ears would not be saluted byruch discordant sounds as now come over the mountains of senators figh fighting tinz in the senate chamber where peace and union ion ought to pi evall but which is now converted into a pugilistic uzi wena where the lowest words and epithets in the vocabulary of language salute the ear no fellow citizens ns these thin things s ought every person who would claim its protection tec ivan tion yes tellow fellow citizens that flag was used in in 1846 in a disgraceful transaction it was pretend pretended led that the united states had sent their regularly or organized gan troops in in order arder to drive a peaceably disposed class of her heir citizens from their homes their fi resides and their temple which is contrary to the ath
