Show APil The PARSON Page 6 Lack Of Interest Westminster Participates In Pocatello Meet Track And Field Dropped A recent decision to drop track has been made by the administration. The decision was made in view of the fact that, there was a general lack of interest, to quote by Curt Smith Coach Mehn. This lack of interest should be credited most- On Saturday, April 14, Coach Mehn and an eleven man track squad set out for Pocatello, Idaho, to particimeet with pate in a three-wa-y Idaho State College and the A.A.U. squad, the Pocatello Gridiron Club, of Pocatello. Eleven Men Team The eleven men on this squad were: John Smith, Wes Hill, Ed Owens, Tom Johnson, Curt Smith, Tuck Hubbard Wayne Johnston, Rod Grun-walLes Moore, Kim McClellan and Glen Morris. d, Individual performances by each Parson in almost every event was better this time than in any previous recordings. The Parson squad netted 22 points out of the meet Coach Mehn stated he thought that we did better than he had previously anticipated. It should be noted here that Idaho State College is in close competition with such Skyline Conference schools as Utah State, BYU, University of Utah, and Montana to mention only a few. No First Places There were no first places taken by Parson men, however there was one close call when Curt Smith was beaten out for first place in the javelin by a distance of 2 inches. The winner hurled it 174 2 and Smith 174. The only other second place on the team was taken by our mile relay team, made up of Grunwald, Owens, Moore and Wayne Johnston, which was clocked at 3:58. Third place honors went to McClellap in the low hurdles; Moore in the 88; Curt Simth in the mile and in the 2 mile; Hill in the 100 and Owens in the 410. Doug Evans, chess champion, contemplates by Bill Powers The final cry of chess vic- tory, Check Mate, was issued from Doug Evans, as he earned his reputation for getting tough when the chips are down. His victory came at the expense of canning, dangerous Chris Segura who, in a long series of games, battled Doug on nearly equal terms. Doug, a Senior, and last years champ, is the winner of the 1962 Chess Tournament at Westminster, and Segura, a Junior is runner-up- . John Smith, the students most prized tribute, his intellectual at- in- tegrity, is placed in immediate jeopard. For him the drive to victory is insatiable; the realization of defeat, an emotional injury to be endured behind the most deceiving of smiles. The true winner is he who can maturely sympathize with his victim; the loser, he who can instantly sublimate his negative impulses by recognizing what the winner must feel. Chess is a tough game. Its reward is seen in terms of individual conquest. Ive been beaten frequently, but never knew an opponent I didnt like. Join us next year. The administrative author- ities must have realized what problems would confront this would be track team. Im wondering if maybe this d- wasnt made a little too hastily, in view of the fact that we have not yet met with any colleges of comparable size except in the College of Southern Utah Relays, which, as of the writing of this article, (Apr. 20, 1962) ecision has not yet been run off. The last question Id like to raise is this: Was it really necessary to have to quit halfway through the season?
