IT IS DRYER THE NEW OFFICERS 1 TAKE THEIR SEATS , - IAN MIMED 'n took Legan City s, new officers their seats at noon yesterday, and ad.y the best and most progressive ministration that Logan City has ever had, that ofWilliamEdwards ad- is now at an end. If the new ministration shall serve the peore- ple as Well as the one that has tired, and we sincerely hope it of this city - may, -for comcause have little will plaint.' The old council met at nine a. m. and was busy with the transaction of unfinished business ""until noon. Then Prest. CainFan-announce- d the . v council ' adjourned and a short recess When the taken. was Caine council President new Tuet," was in the chair and all members were present. The first question to come up was a communication from Mayor Anderson, who was also present. ' He ' submitted the name of Don. C. Benson as Chief of Police, and Mr. Bemtson at once moved that it be confirmed. There was a brief mix-u- p over the of and rules then the question council decided to vote on the nomination. ' The vote stood five to five, and of course the nomination' failed. It is not known whether Mr., Anderson will submit any other name, but probably not as it "would receive" the same treatment. If the Republicans had another man in the council the Democrats would receive none of the appointive offices and as a matter of politics the Democrats feel that they would be foolish to et go of any "of the offices that hey can hold onto. In all probability therefore, all efforts to any of the present Democrat c appointees will fail for the reason named. the-peopl- e -- re-no- ve s , A petition, or rather a protest from theDruggists of the city was then taken up. The council recently passed an ordinance fixing the license to be paid by druggists and prescribing the qualifications for those who desire to engage in such business, and,, this law, the druggists aver, imputes dishonesty, and a desire to avoid or break the law, to them. They resent this and also the other facts that their license ha3 been increas-- . ed fourfold, that a bond is required of them when it is not required ' of and other, tradesmen, in short .that ' they are discriminated against to such an extent as to make the law unreasonable and therefore void. They made out a very strong case and then asked the council to modify the terms of the lawso as to avoid a lawsuit to determine its validity. The petition went to the Attorney for an opinion. The council then adjourned un-t- il , nexiWednesday when the regu lar meeting occurs. At? the session of the old council these matters were disposed of (The special committee that was ppointed last year to take up the natterT)f securing additional water for the city and which finally decided to try and a reservoir and also a park site in the " canyon se-cu- re sub-rpitt- ed an interesting report as to work that it has accomplished t has everything in shape, for the rights needed. After the business had been completed President Came - made a brief little speech in which he thanked the outgoing members of the council for the support they had given him, and complimented them upon the work they had helped to "accomplish? President and Mrs. Taft held their first New Years levee at the White House today. Although Mrs. Taft has not yet regained her .full strength' and seemed rather pale in a gown of The. new prohibition law went into effect. yesterday, and it took but a short time for the diseov-ei- y to be made that it had closed up things a little tignter than was supposed it would that the city was dryer, than was expected. The rciusoii-fo- r this is that the physi- dans and druggists have reached an agreement that there shall be Po .selling, of liquor unden pres-cription in Logan under the pres- cut law. The doctors have agreed to issue no prescriptions -- for liquor at all, and the druggists have agreed that they will, refuse to fill thepi if, they are issued, it will be impossible to secure liquor in this city for any purpose whatever. The reason for this action upon the part of these folk isnot that they are opposed to prohibition, for most of them are prohibitionists, but they feel that the new law is entirely unreasonable in its terms and that it seeks to throw the responsibility for the enforcement of it onto the physicians and druggists,' to an unwarantable degree, -- ' They say that if the ordinance is modified so as to relieve them of this responsibility they will gladly assist in its enforcement, otherwise they do not care to have anything to do with it. Undoubtedly the attention of the council will be called to the objectionable features and if they are deemed to be so the law will be amended, but until this is done or the doctors are satisfied that the law is not a trap for them to be caught in, Logan- will be very dry. The saloons were open on Saturday, and most of them disposed of their stocks of liquor. Yesterday they were clo-e- d tight and men were busy taking out the saloon paraphernalia,. There will be no effort to operate here by any of the owners and no lawsuits if the council will only take the necessary aetion to make the law as, reasonable as possible. The old council did all it could in the matter, securing legal talent from Salt Lake to pass on the law before it was passed, but the application of the law has disclosed its weak points and it is now up to the new council to remedy them. - De-tric- -- - The county eommirsioners were in session yesterday, and they disposed of a good deal of routine business, but" there was- little news in any of it. The took under advisement the request of the people of Stephehson school district that, a precinct be formed out of the territory embraced in the . district, and divided the money received from the Forest Reserve authorities " equally be- tween the three road districts of the county, each getting $78.53. -- . na e l.In 1 ?
