Among the nations of the world, Mali is the third poorest. One third of Malis babies die at birth, disease is rampant and the country is too poor to help itself. It was in response to these tragic conditi9ns that Salt Lake City adopted Ouelessebougou, home to 36,000 persons as a sister community. During each of the past two years $100,000 has been raised to help the people of Ouelessebougou. To date, the money raised has been used to build wells, create a maternity dispensary and provide vocational support During 1989 several SaltLake doctors will travel there to train Malian doctors. These projects are designed to help the Malians become self sufficient, rather than provide temporary relief or short term aid. All proceeds from the race go to the organization. Prizes, trophies, etc., are donated. The race began at the Huntsman Special Events Center on the University of Utah campus, went through the campus to South Temple, and on the Governors Mansion.
