Show WAFTED ON THE WIRES ---- Chetopa, Ks [Kansas], Feb. 18 -- For a long time past, trading men of the Indian [unreadable line] prevent the reports of murders being circulated through the papers of the country. Consequently not half the crimes committed there gain publicity. Reliable persons just from the territory report that two men were murdered a few days ago near Carris ferry, the affair growing out of the father of one of the men accusing the mother of the other man of stealing hogs, also that a short time ago two men were murdered near Talequah and at Fort Gibson. One white man was killed for his money. No efforts, it is said, have been made to arrest these murderers. ---- NEW ALBANY, Ind. Feb. 28 -- John P Bailey?, aged 81 years, was found dead on the floor of his house, Spencer township, Harrison county, horribly gnawed by rats. He appeared to have been dead a week. No food was in the house and nothing to prepare food with. He was refused credit for flour three weeks ago, and it is supposed he died of starvation, though he had money hid away and had a good farm of a hundred acres. He lived alone, and was a widower. ---- NEW YORK, Feb. 28 -- Dr. Brandreth, who lately died at his home in Sing Sing, bequeathed his homestead and furniture to his wife. He leaves the Brandreth House on Broadway, valued at $100,000 to his seven daughters; his stocks, trademarks and the remainder of the estate to his six sons on condition that they pay the widow one thousand dollars a month for her life. ---- PARIS, Feb. 27. -- The Moniteur announces the arrest of a Prussian officer while taking views of the ??? redoubt. He was conveyed to Rheims. ---- OTTAWA, Feb. 27. -- The Catholic priest, Foure, was arrested with four others For firing houses and barns at a village on the Galovean river thirty miles from here. Unemployed workingmen procured a black flag intending to march to the parliament buildings to demand work or bread, but were promised aid. ---- CHICAGO, Feb. 27 -- Notwithstanding the injunctions granted by the courts at Kansas City and Denver, to restrain the American Union Telegraph Co., from interfering with the wires on the Western Union Telegraph Co. on the Kansas Pacific, the former company did cut out the wires this morning and have possession of the same. Under Gould's order the wires on the Union Pacific road known as the Atlantic and Pacific wires were cut out this morning and are in possession of the American Union Co. An injunction would have been applied for ??? as to the Union Pacific Co., but for the assurances from the other side that there would be no interference. Such steps are being taken by the Western Union Co., as will indicate their rights. ---- LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Feb. 26 -- Jas [James] Howard for wife murder and Thomas Edmunds for the murder of Julia Alsbrook and their illegitimate child are under sentence of execution tomorrow at Ozark in Franklin County. The case of demands is before the Supreme Court on appeal, no decision has yet been rendered. ---- PARIS, Feb. 26 -- The inhabitants of St. Petersburgh are beginning to attribute to the students all the recent menaces and crimes there. Threats are consequently heard on all sides against the students and the inhabitants affirm if any criminal act occurs on the anniversary of the emperor's accession they will hold the students responsible, burn the university, and lynch every student who falls into their hands. The government, therefore, is now forced to take measures for protecting the students. |
