Show T7 Serving Utah's Great Pahvant Valley Single Copy $75 USPS short supply Flu vaccine in Kathy Hatter A delay and possibly a reduction in the shipment of influenza vaccine nationwide has forced public health officials to cancel scheduled flu shot clinics in Delta and Fillmore Local health care prov iders have also exhausted their supply of the vaccine The Central Utah Public Health Department was expecting 5S00 doses of vaccine but will receive only 580 doses Last year the Public Health Department in Delta provided 700 flu vaccine immunizations The amount expected for the flu season are 70vaccines or 10 percent of previous doses according to Robert Resendes Health Officer "We will follow Centers for Disease Control guidelines at public health departments and give priority for immunizaresidents as the accine tions to supply allows" said Resendes Local physicians have administrated their supply of flu vaccine and at least one doctor is expecting another shipment Although CDC recommendations are not binding and doctors can give flu shots to whomever they want they will immunize high risk patients first are people Those considered 65 or older residents of nursing homes and chronic care facilities adults and children with a chronic health problem such as diabetes heart disease or asthma persons 6 months to 8 years receiv ing longterm aspirin therapy pregnant women who will be in the second or third trimesters dunng the flu season and people who live w ith or care for these groups Influenza vaccine supplies this year should be about equal to what was disa subbut nationwide tributed last year stantial amount of vaccine will reach providers later than usual Most vaccine doses are usually available to providers by October with 99 percent of distributed doses received before December However many doses are now' expected to be distributed in December or early January The federal government is recommending healthy residents delay getting their flu shots so those who need them most can get them as they become available A delayed vaccination schedule will still protect most people if the flu season does not peak until January or later as it has in 14 of the past 8 years officials said tensifying the supply problem Manufacturers are working closely with the Food and Drug Administration to address these issues of influenzadunng the winEpidemics ter account for nearly 20000 deaths and 110000 hospitalizations each year The flu strikes all age groups however rates of infection are highest among children and those 65 years and older with medical conditions that place them at high nsk from complications Vaccinations are the mary method for preventing flu and its adverse impact The licensed flu vaccine used in the tion made from inactivated or killed fluenza viruses cannot cause influenza hen the vaccine infection or illness ruses and circulating viruses are well matched vaccine can be very effective However flu vaccine only provides protection against influenza according to the Centers for Disease Control Individuals who have received the flu vaccine may develop a respiratory illness due to other virus but mistaken for flu vaccine is made from influenza ruses that continually change and is updated each year This year's flu shotscon-taitwo Type A and one Type B strains representing flu viruses most likely to circulate in the United States dunng the upcoming winter The strains are dubbed A' and B Panama A New Caledonia Flu Yamanashi The vaccine virus is initially grown in embryonated hens’ eggs The virus may contain small amounts of residual egg protein and thimerosal a compound Individuals known to have a hypersensitivity to eggs or other components of the influenza vaccine should not have a flu shot without first consulting a doctor Based on information from flu vaccine manufacturers distribution of approximately 75 million doses is anticipated This total includes nine million doses the Centers for Disease Control has contracted with one vaccine manufacturer to produce Dunng last year's flu season about 77 million doses of vaccine were distributed in the nation of which three million were returned for a net of 74 million doses Production of influenza vaccine will continue through December Typical flu symptoms include fever dry cough sore throat runny or stuify nose headache muscle aches and extreme fatigue Children may experience gastrointestinal problems like nausea vomiting and diarrheas but such symptoms are not common m adults Although the term ‘stomach flu' is sometimes used to describe gastrointestinal illnesses this is caused by other organisms and is not lated to ‘true’ flu Flu can occur even afler vaccination though its symptoms are usually less vere The vaccine prevents illness in percent of healthy people younger than 65 and prevents hospitalization m percent of older people depending on their general health Temporary shortages of the vaccine because of delayed or partial shipments is not a reason to become anxious Flu shots can be taken at any time during flu season It takes after receiving the shot for a person to develop protective antibodies “This shot that could save vaccine is your life particularly m light of this precedented de lay in the flu accine supply” A single dose of pneumonia vaccine protects against 23 different types of pneumonia bacteria and is usually given just once in a lifetime Some people with certain chronic illnesses may need a second dose in five years Although pneumonia can be treated ith antibiotics the best protection is v accinanon against pneumonia The vaccine is safe effective and affordable Medicare Pan B also covers it and can be given anytime of the year or when the influenza vaccine in given Jo Speakman County Commissioners and about three dozen County employees discussed Cost Of Living Allowances raise in Insurance premiums and perscnptions and Merit raises as part of Monday aftemoons’s C ommissioners meeting In question was whether to establish a 3 COLA and if so whether to give it as 3 of employee's actual salary or to give it as an even raise to each employee It was suggested by an employee that it be 4 of employees salary and the other i‘4 as an evenly distributed raise between all employees regardless of salary rate In the case of 3“o of salary those with high salaries will receive a larger raise than those with lesser salaries With the even raise those with higher salary would receive the same as those with lower comes When a motion was made to give 3 based on salary it becomes more aluable it was staled that a raise on merit would not be considered necessary Insurance rates for the County was raised significantly to be exact 23 l°o The County pays the insurance of its employees Each employee has the option to purchase insurance for its family Most employees choose plan B which would be a hike of about S80 If the County pays the additional SS0 for the employee it is to be considered as a wage increase which amounts to roughly another 3 based on SH0 Some are higher Single employees would have that $80 pul into their 401 K not in the paycheck so would not be facators in inflation as it does in Social Security ederal and other COI raises Insurance raises are not usually added tor families He said he (eels that since the ountv employees are paid well m comparison with other salaries and incomes in the ountv who have to handle their own insurance problems it is not fair or reasonable for the County to pay for the family pan of insurance Since the County has extra funds there ill be no raise in taxes so the public w ill not be affected now and is not expected to be aflected in the future It was stated that there would never be a tax raise for
