Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 23, 1978 'V By DAVE WIGHAM Following Region One action on Tuesday the picture looks like this The only thing that everyone can agree on concerning Region Four basket-ba- il is that the region is m a mess right now. The mess is caused by the top six teams, all of which are separated by one or two ball games. p!aoff IF VIEWMONT wins on Friday then they would be tied with the loser of the Laton and Sky View game for fifth and sixth place in the region The two schools would then playoff with ea h other for tho-spots If Viewmont loses Friday then they would be sixth and would automatically have to playoff with a Salt HOODS e Area Well Represented In Wrestling Tournament By DAVE WIGHAM Last week I had the opportunity to attend the state wrestling tournament at the University of Utah for the 4A schools since some of our local athletes were involved SLNCE THE Salt Lake City people, the press mainly, like to talk about their dominance of certain sporting events, lets take a look at how the 4A tournament came out. Of the top four schools in the meet, Brighton, Weber, Viewmont and Bountiful, three of them are from Region One Thats right, three of the top four teams came from somewhere outside of Salt Lake City In fact as one can see two of those schools are from Davis County This is an indication to me that both Davis County and Region One have some great talent in the wrestling area Alden Button of 44 North Mountain Fruit Road, Heights, received the 198 HortieulturaiiSt of the Year award from the I lah Stale FFA (Future I armors of America) 5 MR. BIRTON was present ed the plaque during the an nual FFA state convention ih Salt Lake City The plaque In recug leads as follows nitmn of your enviable record as a fruit grower, for your leadership ro'l in promoting tie fruit industry and for be mg a good friend to Future THE WRESTLING programs in this area don't get much recognition, from school support, etc. more than it has in the past years but compared to the smaller schools the support is minimal. Take for example the Wasatch team, they had the whole school and town at the tournament, including the pep band These smaller schools realize the dedication the athletes have to have and they support them All in all the wrestling year in this area was a great one Interest went up throughout, as evidenced with the number of spectators at the Bountiful-lewmont dual meet. The athletes and coaches are improving each year Farmers, presented the by FFA Association He has served , director of the Davis Countv Hrtitul tural Society' and has bten a leader of that society for many years HE IS a great supporter of FFA and has employed number a FA studt nts over the years on his large V of 1 fruit farm Using a variety of techniques, some of which are close planting, fertilization and water, resulting in an ex celient high quality of fruit AS WITNESSED last week when the top teams from throughout the state gather, this area has some of the best around MR. BURTON at one time had 30 acres of fruit trees, unsistingof cherries, apricots and peaches, but presently is raising only cherries He has eight acres now Part of his a reage (42 acres) he is using the close planting system, planting 208 trees per acre instead of the 54 trees per acre, which is normally planted by fruit farmers Due to special pruning process of the trees, the yield per tree is less, but the yield per acre is greater and the quality of the fruit is much better and larger m size He has also planted blue grass under the trees KE IS experimenting with sprinkler type water system, by turning one valve he can water his entire orchard Mr Burton stated, The water system can be converted to a heating system by changing sprinkler outlets to heating c winning over Gary Killbrew 21 67. 8 WINNERS of THEY will enter the state finals on Feb 26 and 27 and compete in the World Championship Chariot and Cutter Races at Pocatello, Ida on March 18 They defeated the Flannary Family team in the final race with a time of 21 38 over team time 23 73 WINNER of the Futurity division were Bud Strayhorn and kids team Mr Strayhorn is from Layton and won top spot of the season with a time 19 54 of defeating the Runaway Ranch team whose time was 19 85. In the same division on Saturday, Hammon and Havner lime was 19 65 in the second race. Randall Brown 20 12 Saturdays A League were Jack Clawson 23 26 over Fred and Kip Cabaness 23 82, Grant Workman 24 06 over Jeff Mitchell 24.67, Kevin Christensen 24 01 over Dick Sommers 24 05, Barker and Tracy 23 98 over Randall and Brown 24 13, Dave Erickson 24 87, Dan Vtkory 2433 (both won with a bye), Lake Shore Stables 21 85 over Steve Smith 24 19, Jack and Jay Clawson 21 38 over Hannary Family 23 71 and Dan Lewis 23 38 over Howard Koser 23 53 np STARTED SOMETHING The wife, working a crossword puzzle, turned to her mate. What is a female sheep, dear'5'' Ewe, he replied without looking upand the fight was on WOODS Cross enters the game, depending again on what happened Tuesday when the Wildcats played hosts to Ogden and the Darts hosted Box Elder, with a little revenge on their minds Going into Tuesday night action the Wildcats were a game behind the Darts, that means they could either be tied or two games behind when the two square off on Friday each tree Through thi pnxess, when the heaters are m use, the temperature can be raised eight degrees In the summer time when the temperature is above 90 dt prees, the sprinkler system can be used as an air condi tinning unit He used this as a means of sprinkling the themes daily, a week or so bt fore they are to be picked HE RECENTLY has gone to the U of late. pick rather than the snipping process and this has proved very successful and interesting Some people travel from various parts of the United States to pick their iwn cherries He said, there are eight families who come with their campers from out of state annually, pick the cherries and can them while here They have canned as high as BOO pints during their stay Mr Burton is a native of Kaysville and has lived on a fruit farm all of his life His father and grandfather were both fruit farmers and he took over the orchard tn 1935 HIS life has been devoted to producing quality fruit and he has taken pride in his vocation Always willing to share his knowledge with others and has been especially helpful working with the Davis High F FA Chapter, np Clearfield wanted to go undefeated and win the league title this year in basketball and right now the Falcons and their coaches would settle for one out of the two CLEARFIELD has lost three league games this year but still has a chance to win the league title The two schools ahead of them m the standings, one game in the win columns ahead of them, are Roy and Weber As luck would have it those are the final two games for the Falcons this season On Tuesday they battled Roy on their home floor then on Friday they travel up to Weber to battle the Warriors. A sweep by the Falcons would give them at least a tie for title, one loss would ruin any chance of winning the region crown BOTH these clubs beat the Clearfield team in the first go round, although neither one of then dominated the Falcons Roy used their home floor to earn a one-poivictory, while the Weber team went into Clearfield and came win away with a four-poi- right behind McCleery in scoring with a 17 point WILDCAT big man Mark McCleery has been a steady average while Hill, coming back into form is hitting at a 12 point barrage Ostler and McCleery were the only two in double figures in the first meeting and the Cats will have to spread out the scoring more evenly if they want to performer for Coach kayne Baker and is averaging 20 points a game from his center spot. After a slow start, probably getting football out of his system, Troy Howard has come on strong and is currently scoring at a 17 point per game clip. These two will be going head to head on both ends of the floor this week In the first meeting the Darts tried a man for man defense in the first half and McCleery ate them alive, then when the Darts switched to a zone the Woods Cross bunch had their problems getting their big win JUNIOR guard Mike Mounteer is hitting at a 12 point a game clip and will more than likely draw WYd-ca- t Lynn Westergard for company Wildcat Todd Bal f and Dart Tod Taylor or Brad Petersen will see enough cf each other in this contest If the Wildcats can get the bdll inside to McCleery then the night will be long for Coach Mike Gardner and his man the ball THE first meeting between these two clubs the Darts pulled away from a close game to win by about five The WTldcats outscored the Darts from the field but Davis showed some clutch foul shooting down the stretch ALSO IN that first meeting the Wildcats put up a full court press near the end of the game m order to catch up and the press bothered the Darts Which means the expected game plan is forW the ll Davis team to zone the j cats and for the Wildcats to press the Darts the entire ballgame center the Besides to win. This matchup pits two of the best big men m the area against each other. One started strong and has never No one has to remind the of these two losses, they are out for some good old fashioned revenge Some speculate that THE GAME of basketball is a lot of tfs, the Falcons were looking ahead to these two games last Friday when they went to Layton, taking nothing away from the Lancers though THE FALCONS have an excellent chance to beat both of these clubs, keep in mind when you read this story the first game, Roy at Clearfield will be history In the second game Weber fans will get to see two clubs who definitely believe in tne of concept d basketball Both these clubs get balanced scoring, play defense, good hard-nosehustle all the time and make few mistakes A d BOTH coaches, Dick Con-nal- y scoring in the double figures, he can store when he has to and Friday he just .nighi have to The other guard for the Clearfield team, Mark Reid, is more of a playmaker but he scored well in the junior varsity ranks and could probably light up the varsity nets if he had to These two will be more concerned with stopping the Weber guards from scoring too much m this contest, theyll let their big people score and concentrate on stopping the opposition THE interesting fact about the scoring stats is that the Warriors get points from their center Montgomery (14 a game) and their guards Coleman (14 a game) and Trawick (14 a game) Clearfield on the other hand gets their points from their center Johnson (13 a game) and their forwards Wallace (19 a game) and Florence (12 a game) that CLEARFIELD wanted the league title when the year started, they still have that goal Knowing the type of competitive players and these players get their averages the game will depend on the other players on the floor. This is where Clearfield takes over with Darren Parry This guard has had some nights and Rodger Reid, have been around long enough to realize what a game like this means going into a state tournament. Its always nicer to go to the tournament with a win under your belts, call it a confidence factor, than it is to go with a loss in the last game coaches at the Clearfield school theyre not about to give up that goal without a fight to the finish r$ FLOOR COVERINGS (825-SOOCOMPLETE COL OR -C- scoring from Ray Coleman, Q) of SELECTION ARMSTRONG FLOORS OORDINATION PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION payment pun Quality The Weber team gets their SOURiAN SNFFT vwn TV NO WAX FLOORS nCHON COAlON FLOW TILES Attends BiSie Workshop Davis County planner will a bicycle safety workshop in Denver, Colorado on March Scott Carter has been chosen as one out of 50 people in the region to participate in the workshop A attend $1.00 OFF WilH THIS AO $1 Ou OfF WITH 1 MO AO OIL & FILTER CHANGE ONLY (mb a travel budget rk INCLUDES S QUARTS TPOP AIITIC 10 40 MOTOR 04. Coach Kim Peterson has turned the Bountiful wrestling program from one of the also-ran- s into a top notch squad. The Braves only lost one dual match throughout the year and then placed fourth in the state. A record for the school The defending title team, If it's any Brighton, lost a dual meet to the Braves 45-consolation the Clipper Coach of the Year in wrestling goes to the Brave head man. Dont forget the job that Ron Tree has done at View mont either Each year the Vikes lose a lot of people to graduation and others think the Vikes will be down the next year Year after year though the Vikings always have tough competitive squads To become successful is one thing, but to stay successful is a fete m itself chariot racing team was first place winner in the 1977-7Beehive State Racing Association competition of the at the Lagoon Racing track. Davis, and with only a couple of games left all of them have legitimate shots at winning the crown. Also at stake is the possibility of a playoff versus an automatic berth into the 3A tournament to be held at Weber State College the second week in March. All this means that every game from here on in is that much more important than the previous one. THIS Friday marks a special event for two of these teams. Not only do they play each other, which makes it a must win, but the bragging rights to Davis County go along with it. The Davis team travels to Woods Cross is a game that means a lot to both Lake City school Jack and Jay Clawsons Cross, Logan, Box Elder, Ogden and Ben Lomond are all near the top of the league standings ball clubs. Following this game both these teams face two more games, both have one against the not so strong clubs and the other game against one of the other top clubs. Woods Cross gets South and Logan , while the Darts get Ben Lomond and Bear River. P U P Purchase O 0 One N N 1 1 oz.
