Our four school rooms and the Relief Hall will not conveniently the 300 children who will he required to attend the distriet schools this year. One teacher in a room with sixty or seventy pupils of all grades is not a satisfactory condition of affairs. Do wc ever consider the main cause of slow, mental development in our children? Is it not time we were doing something for our little ones and also the larger ones? Too many classes and pupils of all grades, as is the case in our schools, fritter away the time of the teacher and and the pupils w itlmiit producing satisfactory results. Under such conditions each pupil cannot he reached iiidix iiliral-lSufficient Interest on the part of tlie teacher and the pupil cannot be maintained. Our children go to school year after year and each year over the same routine. Arithmetic is begun every winter. During the winter the child gets into fractious. A'aeation comes and the greater part is forgotten. The precious years of childhood which will never return are wasted like water, and the hoy starts out in life poorly prepared to engage in the affairs of a busy world. For a remedy to this condition of affairs the course of study prescribed by tlie county superintendent anil tlie teachers can be divided into grades, and tlie pupils assigned to the various grades according to age, ability and scholarship, to be determined by the principal and the teachers. The principal of the grammar grade should be principal of all the other district schools In the town, under the direction of the county superintendent. This plan gives dignity and unity to the work. The schools of the town are thus placed tinder ne management ; we would have a system. Suitable appliances can he seeiir'Hl for the extra grades and these can bo transferred to our new central building when it is erected. The appliances will have to be procured some time and let us make a start now as we need them very badly. The following gradation Is merely suggestive, and the location of grades Is made te accommodate children living in the remotest parts of town: In the Xortlu ast school house we can have the Grammar Grade, consisting of advanced fourths and fifths, and one First Primary grade, consisting of charts and firsts; in the Relief Hall, one First Primary and one Second Primary consisting of second and third readers; in tlie Southwest building, ona First Primary and one Second Primary; In tlie Northwest building one First Primary and one Second Primary ; in tlie Court house or some other ceuti ally located building, the Intermediate grade, consisting of advanced thirds and fourths. liitviir.vTiNii srsrKM. Along with this change let us introduce, or rather revise, the graduating system. As soon as lie becomes conscious that lie has accomplished a little, he will redouble Ills efforts to accomplish more. Many persons who never thought of taking a higher course will be stimulated to effort, and many more will stay w ith the district school work nutil it is completed. AVlicn tlie schools have been graded and tlie graduating system has been fully revised then the corner stoDe of our High School will have been laid. By this system the stone is kept rolling, the pupils steadily advance, teachers are compelled to work to a plan, tlie greatest number arc Instructed and educated in the most efficient manner, and by tlie most economical expenditure of time and money. Let ns ail work for this end and when it is gained we will see educational progress such as has never before been witnessed in our town. 80 B. Xfw Volts, July 21 Samuel AV.
