Morale Call System way to keep in touch BY MARY LOU GORNY Hilltop Times editor F red Crew at the 75th Communications Squadron Switchboard knows the Morale Call System makes a difference. "A fruit basket was delivered in person" by a formerly deployed Air Force service member, he recalls. The individual wanted Crew's then-supervisor to know just how highly the service had been appreciated. Crew began his career as an operator, one of those answering questions and placing calls for the deployed, and now works as the supervisor for the Hill Air Force Base switchboard. Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Lyon, Readiness Noncommissioned Officer in Charge at the Airman and Family Readiness Center, briefs departing service members before deployment on the services available to them including Hill's Morale Call System. 'Information passes quickly and efficiently between the deployed and family members," Lyon says about the service. 'There's nothing like hearing your loved one's voice during a deployment." She encourages all deploying members, both married and single, to sign up for the services offered at the briefings given by the AFRC. "They can list three local numbers (to Hill AFB) or use a fourth option to call a * toll-free number (to their extended family elsewhere)." Lyon goes on to say that in some cases, "we can get them access information from another base—that way they don't have to use their phone cards on international calls," Lyon said. In this particular instance, the call is not part of Hill's service but the AFRC and Lyon want the soon-to-be-deployed service member to have the access they need to talk to their families and will work to get them that information. The sergeant finds families love the convenience of the four 15 minute calls allowed each week through Hill's system. "But the service member must sign up prior to leaving for services offered by our center and the Hearts Apart Program," she say&L1JPc it; ij 1 : " -' Other conveniencesJincluded in -the Hearts • 'fA#fflt Program SflSa fre& biMatfge N»fflB' the member is deployed, and a referral certificate for the Give Parents a Break/Give Children a Break programs offered at the Youth Center and Child Development Center. "Any member of Team Hill who deploys can use our (Morale Call) system — no matter what branch of the service cr if they are civilians,"she said The system is so well liked that Air Force Materiel Command based its own system on some aspects of the program. Crew urges the deployed to make use of the service as well and to access the system during their deployment as soon as they can to smooth the transition. s. r. :*. •t.. :.t. :*. :.*.
