NO. 20 VOL IX AUGUST 27, 1970 Lewiston, Utah The Baptist Foundation of America Inc., shortly after its founding, had assets totaling more than $20 million, is presently headquartered in an impressive suite of offices in Los Angeles and turns to the public a benevolent face. But it has issued countless millions of dollars worth of promissory notes in exchange for property and services, most of which notes are now in default. The Journal's researchers were unable to determine whether the BFA was more victimizer or victimized, whether the foundation consummated good deals with bad dealers. But the foundation lists among its assets thousands of acres of land in Tennessee, y and tax assessor down cant find any of it. There was just a chance tlvat Gov. Don Samuelsons convincing victory in the Aug. 4 primary election could have led to a greater growth of conservatism and a strengthening of the right wing in toe party. But this didn't prove to be so. The split in toe Bannock County GOP Central Committee docs show additional strength of the right wing in that group. And toe Kootenai County Republican Committee moved farther to toe right with toe election of Gary Ingram as chairman. Ingram is an conservative Young Republican. On toe other side, however, moderates were put in control of the GOP committees in Bonneville and Nez Perce extra counties. Canyon county conservatives retained control of that committee and an extra conservative was elected chairman of toe Ada County GOP Central Committee, although as it turned out toe fight for toatt office hinged primarily on personalities rather than philosophy. It will take more than moderate victories in Nez Perce and Bonneville counties to move the full GOP State Central Committee from its right wing posture. There were no shakeups in the county Democratic central committees, but the Ada county committee continued to work away at elimination of toe old guard. The Democratic ' party in Idaho still lacks toe force of an effective organization at the state level, althoui some strides have been made in The party this direction. cannot expect to build an effective organization until it wins control of the governorship and toe legislature. The Ada County Republican Central Committee elected Robert L. Watson as chairman over Mrs. Clyde (Peggy) Bunting. Mrs. Bunting worked diligently for toe election and no one was more surprised than she when Watson won. Women committee members were Watsons chief backers. Although he entered toe race late, these supporters brought him toe victory. In effect, therefore, the battle was woman against woman. There are more extra conservatives than center is ts and moderates on toe Ada County GOP Committee, and although philosophy was not strictly an issue, Watsons kind of conservatism benefited him. The Ada County Democratic Central Committee kept as chairman, Howard Humphand rey, a moderate-libera- l, defeated Emmett Bennett, a remnant from toe old committee, as state committee-man- . ' Bennett, hardly old enough to really be old guard, was replaced by Ray Brandt, a A tireBoise businessman. less worker for toe party, Mrs. Violet Harms, was named state committeewoman and a third new face, Mrs. Adelbert Bowman, was named vice chairman. The Democratic committee but may be reinvigorated, toe Ada Democrats failed to fill county and legislative tickets and without strong candidates, they cannot expect to make a dent in toe usual Ada Republican ' ELECTROLUX Your Finest Cleaner Area Representative, Owes L.
