In t$au Francisco there are several Chinese shoe shops, the handi In which ore employed chietly iu malting very cheap and course women's work; their skill, industry and economy enabling them, to do tt at such low rates that Imof this class have been ported goo-ldriven from the market. This it Kpos itive Iteoellt to San Francisco, keeping a large amount of capital at home that would otherwise be seat abroad. The chuuge uow going oa in the method of carrying on business here, we hav reason to believe, has affected no cias of artiaans more seriously than the shoemakers; ami the ease with which all classes of goods can now be imported, owing to the completion of the Paciiio Itailroad, renders it inipoe-sH- l for manufacturers or journeymen, under preseut circumstances, to compete with eastern manufacturers. It is all in vain to talk about the great superiority of home-madgood; the great, unreasoning public will always buy that which they can purchase at the lowest price. .Shoemakers, as a clas, have 'never been among the best paid artizans of our Territory. True, boots and shoes are among the articles most absolutely aud indipensab!y necessary in a commuutity; but this fact, instead of being a benefit to the shoemakers, as a class, has really been a drawback; for in, the early, days of the settlement of the Territory, owing to the lack of skilled artizans, anything at all like a boot or a shoe, no matter how rough or uuskilfully made, if it would only cover a foot, readily found a market; hence, this branch of manufacture has been miserably carried on, aud though the market has never been with hands, the bungling and unskilful workman has had about as good a chance as he who was skilful. The change now being introduced here In carrying on business, the demand for cheap boot and shoes and the low price at which they" can be liutKirted fatal sold are certain to Cause much temporary inconvenience to this class of artizans; but it will ul tlmately prove one of the greatest benefits to them. They, as a clas, have hitherto lived, generally, from hand to mouth; aud under the present circumstances, for the reasons assigned above, the prospect for better days with them is not very bright. But if they can not work on the ttboe bench, a tiling not at ail really desirable, as it invariably subjects all who do it to all the physical ills iuciJen-ta- l to a sedentary life, they can do much better, they ran goto farming. JLand Is plentiful, homesteads cau be had, aud with industry can soon be made comfortable; and this, course, instead of being a dependent one, aud necessitating a continual light to keep the "wolf front the door," will ensure a tolerable share of Independence, and also health in the doing of it. Oue of the employ-er- a in tlii branch of trade whose eyes are fully open to the position, in conversation with us recently, expressed his determination to take this course. being fully alive to the impossibility of successfully and profitably competing with eastern made goods. To leave the bench and go on the land ay cause'iucoavenleaco and toffle de gree of perplexity ,but this will only be teuiHrary. Some will uo doubt say TM s -- e over-stocke- d ever-prese- fit they do not understand fanning, and bavin worked at their trade for a good" many years they are too old to learn; but this is a mistaken notion, and be sides, it Is the only course that offers emancitatloti from dependence and penury to the shoemakers as a class. f The new order of things la inevitable; uo amount of squirming can alter it. The Faciflc Kill road has bridged over the space between the markets of Utah aud the Kast, and as they cannot ossI bly compete with the manufactures there, with present facilities, at any rate, they must, like sensible men, which, our accept that an Inevitable -changed commercial relations force upon us. But shall tanners and shoemakers from the field and give up the manufacture of leather and shoes in this Territory?
