Show THAT resolution the city council in adopting the recommendation of its committee has very prudently and safely concluded that it cannot afford to pay any attention to alic batter meaning the purport cf a resolution introduced by a young d inexperienced member by chieh it was proposed to censure this journal for its outspoken though temperate and enst criticism of what we conscientiously believed to be the councils arbitrary proceedings on certain occasions that body probably realized that it was going too far which it certainly was doing in attempting to abridge alie liberties of the press and suppress free speech tho present council has already enough to answer to the people for without its making matters any worse THE ENQUIRER has endeavored during its controversy with the council to be consistent in its position it lias avoided personalities its reports of the council proceedings have been given with fairness and substantial correctness it has been wholly devoid of an intent to misstate or misrepresent the doings of that body and we challenge any member to successfully prove wherein it lias done so ve knew that the majority of the people were opposed to the license movement proposed by the council and deemed it to be our duty to do our best to prevent the proposed unpopular measure from being adopted this was our self imposed mission as journalists and we worked hard and earnestly to that end but failed to accomplish the object sought the council was evidently bent on pursuing a contrary policy and would not be turned from its purpose even a numerously signed petition bearing the signatures of many of the most distinguished and influential citizens in town could not effect the desired object the people of this city with THE can now only wait for further developments and they are coming thick and fast the present situation as the result of the councils determined policy is certainly no improvement on the situation aa it existed when that body went into office on the contrary it has gone from bad to worse aye ten times worse the council may have more money in the exchequer but then what has been the sacrifice and what do the police records show the situation today to day is certainly appalling as compared with the condition of this city at the time the present council entered upon its legislative functions we doubt not that the majority of the council will acknowledge before expires policy wm ox o x erroneous one |
