Show starch manufacture mr edward tucker esq belfast ireland has invented a process of manufacturing starch from grain and potatoes which appears valuable it is substantially this the reduced grain or potatoes is submitted to the usual process of fermentation and is washed so as to se the bron bran or refuse of the potato from the rest of the materials forming the substance to be treated the starching liquor is then run into a vat and a allowed i to remain fox for about thirty six hours I 1 for precipitation the supernatant supernatant liquor is then run off or rem removed av and the precipitate is broken up A polut on of sulphate of sado or Gla glaubert Glau bers aberl salts in boiling water is prepared in the proportion of about 13 lbs ibs of the salts to one ton of the wheat or oth other er grain un under U der treatment and after cooling down this solution it is poured into the precipitated starch and the vat being filled up with water the entire contents are roughly mixed and intimately incorporated by sti stirring ari i ng the mass is then allowed to stand for awen ty four or thirty hours perfectly kuiee quiescent cent in the subsequent process technically known as the fine sai ift when ewhen the water and slimes fire are removed another solution of the s same ame salt is employed but in much smaller proportions about 3 lbs ibs weight only being applied to one ton of wheat at this stage in in C combination with the sulphate of sou soda a portion of sulphuric acids acid is used in the proportion of about one quart of the acid to the produce of four tons of wheat the acid in a diluted state is poured gradually into the vat which is then nearly filled up with fresh water and ancl the whole contents are thoroughly g hl v mixed by agitation when the starch h has be been en precipitated it is finished and prepared for sale and used in the ordinary manner the patentee remarks that he has found sulphate of magnesia ni of soda and other salts and acids available for a similar purpose this general process renders pure auf e all suitable for manufacturing s tarch starch however ho wever hard and unsuitable it may have been ori originally binally gi nally the pure starch is also better separated sepe rated from the glutinous constituent of the grain whilst ane manufactured starch is superior in purity sweetness 9 and strength fineness of texture and whiteness as compared with all starch made the usual asual way and the yield is generally y increased althe the plough loom and anvil |
