The event was SUSCs Intramural championships and was directed this year by Jason Allred. Allred divided weight categories into four divisions. Lightweight, 125 to 150 pounds; middleweight, 151 to 170 pounds; light heavyweight, 171 to 185 pounds and the heavyweights from 186 pounds on up. The lightweights featured friends Jason Abregana and Celestine Sue battling for the title in a best two out of three series. ' Abregana managed to win the decisive match. Middleweights Mike Stoedter and Mark Cranney came to grips for the championship match with Stoedter edging Cranney in the final round. In the light heavyweight divison Rob Edwards outlasted Dane Andersen for bragging rights to the armwrestling title. In the heavyweight division a quick Steve Johnson defeated Ken Golding for the championship. Allred admitted that several of the weight divisions were lacking but that overall the competition was pretty fair. The pitching staff will get an immediate test this week when the SUSC baseball team opens the season in southern California The opening series of games begins today against the University of Califorma-Sa- n Diego. Friday, the travel across town to take on the University of San Diego. Saturday the Birds face Point Loma College in a doubleheader. All three of these schools play pretty good baseball, and all three have probably played 15 games by now, Larry Wilson, SUSC baseball coach said. Even with that many games packed into three days, I think our pitching depth is quite adequate. Wilson will be starting his third season with a team with lots of potential, but we cant afford to lose many players, or we could end up with a mediocre year. Team attitude is excellent, according to coaching staff. The Thunderbirds are looking at a bundle of new players who will need to adjust quickly to an extremely competitive level of play, Wilson pointed out. How well the individual members adjust to to playing some excellent university level teams will determine the squads success, the head coach explained. This is a different team than we had last year. We probably have better defense and pitching depth. Team speed is very good. We will probably hit with less power than a year ago, but we have very good contact hitters. Our team batting average should be good, Wilson said. Also, we have several people tnat are very versatile with the bat; they can do several different things. The bright spots on the squad are the depth in the pitching staff and the outfield. Three regular starting pitchers return, plus a fourth player who earned a starting berth berfore suffering an injury. The entire starting outfield returns, including Jerry James, who led the team in hitting last season with a .431 average. Lady Birds pressed out s The story for SUSCs basketball squad failed worqens short of the hoped-fo- r happy ending Tuesday night in Las Vegas, N.M., as New Mexico Highlands dropped the in the first round of Lady Birds the NAIA District Seven playoffs. ragS'to-riche- 1984 78-5- 7 It was a zone press defense that spelled defeat for SUSC as the Lady Cowboys forged a 5 halftime lead. Gwen Thomas, SUSCs leading scorer on the year, was held to just two points in that period, and four for the game. NMSU keyed on Thomas and the highest Individual SUSC point output for the night was Darla Hunts 10.
