Fire and Depression "Wc complain of hard times but continue to burn lip our wealth." said W. E. Mallalieu, general manager of The National Hoard of hire Underwriters, in a recent interview. "That seems to he an unreasonable attitude, which can be attributed to the failure of the American public to understand the true significance of the destruction of property by fire." He said that an estimate of the lire loss for 1931, recently tabulated, amounted to $452,017,020. There has been a general increase in recent years extending to almost every cause. In addition to the vast destruction of property, 10,000 people lose their lives in fires annually and an equal number arc permanently disfigured or maimed. Insurance, of course, provides a financial safeguard which enables many to rebuild property and offest some of the damage caused by fire. Hut the material destroyed represents a definite portion of the country's natural wealth, permanently lost for all useful purposes. The continued loss of the nations wealth on such an enormous scale as that represented by the annual fire waste in recent years, means endangered industries and a land lacking natural resources, in which the attainment of a maximum prosperity is unlikely. The great loss in 1931, averaging $37,' 8,0X5 each month, was severely felt in a year ot depression. The public should recognize that it is everyones responsibility to aid in reducing losses during the coming year, and thereby aid the unemployment situation, conserve the nations wealth through lowered fire waste and help prevent deaths from fire. There must be an active interest and a genuine desire to reduce fire losses. Everyone must do his share. . Dollars From Good Roads .. . , Good roads put dollars into the motorists pocket. A recent report states that Wyoming roads oiled last year will save automobile owners $1,087,000 annually. The bureau of roads in that state has found that the cost of operating a car is one cent a mile less on paved or oiled roads than on gravel. And the cost of oiling 596 miles of road was $1,200,000 but slightly more than one years saving. Anyone who has driven over the rutty, muddy, roads that are still too prevalent, will bear out these findings. Nothing save accident is more deIn trimental to a car, or to the motorists pleasure. these days of fast transport and widespread use of'the automobile, the archaic, dangerous cow path road has no place. Road oiling, is cheap. First-clas- s surfaces, of mixtures, can be constructed for a very few thousand dollars a mile, with remarkably low upkeep costs. Such roads reduce motoring costs to the minimum. assure a passable artery at all times of year, under all weather conditions, act as an attraction to the tourist, bring business to small towns, are a boon to the farmer. They not only pay for themselves, but return to the state and the taxpayer a very high rate of interest both in actual cash and in benefits onlv slightlv less tangible. Baby Turkeys . . .
