Show HILLTOP TIMES flMES November 15, 2007 Ogden remembers veterans with parade, ceremony downtown BYTIMGURRISTER Standard-Examiner staff tgurrister@standard.net O GDEN — The second annual Ogden Veterans Day Parade, one of Utah's only veterans parades, briefly took over the downtown Nov. 10. Seemingly every veterans' group and branch of the armed service was represented in the parade where the usual trappings, bands, politicians, firemen throwing candy, were interspersed with lumbering military vehicles and uniformed companies, often joined by plain-clothed,spouses and children. Korean War veteran Jim Craner, 76, a former Air Force sergeant, walked alongside son Tyler, 34, an Army major headed to the war in Afghanistan at the first of the year. "He's a hero type," Craner said of his son. "I was just there, doing my tour." Both of South Ogden, Jim wore his full-dress uniform, while Tyler had on his combat sfind camo fatigues. Tyler has already served a 13-month stretch in Iraq. "Turns out he went out on about a hundred convoy missions," his father said, "instead of the assignment at a desk he told us he had at the Hospital, a specialized hospital for children. "That's the only lottery I've ever won." His wingman in one of the tiny Model Ts was Vice President Dave Borgeson, also of Ogden, proud father of Dave Jr., who ships out to Iraq in 30 days. "The military has been great for him, made him grow up. He didn't like college," he said of the son preparing to deploy from Fort Hood, Texas. A patriotic "Support the Troops" rally with military speakers immediately followed the parade at the ballpark. At the rally, Ogden Mayor Matthew Godfrey thanked the BETH SCHLANKER/Standard-Examiner veterans assembled for their Adelena Duran, 11, and her father, retired Army Sgt Gilbert Duran, wave flags as they walk in the sacrifices, which he hoped a Veterans Day Parade on Historic 25th Street in Ogden on Nov. 10. parade might honor.
