Show 1 CIVIL WAR U lai TO HIST funeral services for powell johnson held wednesday in glenwood ward chapel funeral services for pov ell johnson w who lie died at his home sunday november 20 wore were held wednesday afternoon in the ward chapel bishop andrew am officiating musical numbers were sometime well understand anti and my father knows by the ward vard choir sweet hour of prayer was rendered by a quartet and a duet unanswered yet was given by mrs H E heilesen and mrs W C sorensen the speakers were H H bell isaac Is S hansen C W powell sr and bishop andrew each refer ed to the excellent qualities of character of the deceased in his life of untiring service to his family community and friends and offered words word of consolation to those who are left to mourn his departure the invocation was offered by president ib nt james 11 peterson of richfield anti and rudolph rickenbach pronounced the benediction the grave was avas dedicated by J H payne A profusion of beautiful floral offerings expressed the esteem in which mr johnson was held by those who who knew him powell jensen johnson was born bom in e denmark march 28 1839 he was the son of marcus jensen and annie M R Lindhard tsen in 1854 lie he and his sister sophia who was then 12 years year of age left denmark with a company of emigrants and upon reaching america joined the saints saint in in missouri and came to salt lake city in hans P alsens comp company ariy which was composed of saints 70 wagons ponies cows and oxen grandpa johnson walked every step of the way and drove a bearil of oxen oen froni from th e missouri river to salt lake city they arrived in salt lake city october 5 1851 1854 1 seven years later h his s parents came to utah and in this short t time me lie he had succeeded in getting a come home 20 acres of tilled land four head of horses cattle and sheep he entered the service luring during the civil war april 30 1862 in captain lott smiths brigade of men and was a member of the grand army of the republic ile he was also a mem her ber of the nauvoo legion october 8 1863 1363 he married melissa A straton at draper and in 1874 he joined the tha plural marriage with christiana christensen Christen ben they lived in draper for twenty years moving to glenwood in 1883 two years later his second wife aie died d and the five children which blessed this happy union N were ere taken into the home of his first wife nife and reared I 1 he was the father of eleven children six of whom survive him they are mrs james killian and mrs eliza slater of long beach california mrs arthur ence of richfield wm win johnson of annabella and mrs J W peterson and mrs jas AT johnson of glenwood he is survived also by his widow melissa A straton Jo johnson linson 47 grandchildren 58 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren |
