Show 1 washington t 1 i NEWS LETTER I 1 I 1 hy by CONGRESS congressman IAN GRANGER V SPECIAL VISITOR last friday all of washington was excited over the arrival of admiral nimitz and while we joined in the welcoming parade for him we utahna were far more wide eyed and excited over the presence of our own utah hero seaman george E wahlen of ogden george is the third utah boy to receive the congressional medal of honor which was bestowed on him by pre president S ident truman in the presence of those of us honored to attend the ceremony george later accompanied admiral nimitz through the streets of washington decorated for this homecoming and was a guest of congress POSTWAR PROJECTS FEDERAL BUILDINGS washington is buzzing these days with the business of providing the money and plans for the construction of worthwhile postwar building projects the post office department has recommended to congress an extensive building program to provide adequate housing accommodations for federal agencies in federal bu buildings il dings there are nine communities in in the first congressional district of utah where new federal buildings have been pug suggested 9 ested for immediate construction st it is recommended that roosevelt and tremonton Tre monton be provided with buildings to cost that milford mt alt pleasant and salina be considered for the construction of structures and that delta heber city and manti be the site of new buildings while fillmore is to receive consideration for a building to cost there is every indication that congress will approve appropriations sufficient to make possible this highly needed building program FEDERAL AID HIGHWAYS congress has taken final action on the federal aid highway bill which provides funds for the immediate construction st of highways as provided in in the hi highway act of 1944 this act authorizes the expenditure of in federal money per year for ethree three years to be matched by state money for the construction of highways utah state highway engineers are already in washington contacting contact contacting iny the he officials of the public roads A administration i nun in an effort to obtain immediate approval so that road building program can get under way immediately |
