Governor C. C. Moore of Idaho to the sheepmen and in plain words, fired State Game Warden Otto M. Jones, one of the best game wardens Idaho ever had, and a man who had the united support of the sportsmen's organiza- tions of the entire state. Everyone who has heard the news says the governor has made a big mistake, and if he is playing politics he will eventually find that he has stirred up a hornets nest. A united sportsmens organization can enter the field of politics and can defeat any candidate, but they are not organized for that purpose. ' Money which is collected from the people to fish and hunt is paid in access and above their general taxes. Fishing and hunting licenses are an extra tax levied by the consent of the sportsmen for the purpose of propagation of fish and game, and there is absolutely no relation between this tax and other taxes or special taxes. It is d a tax and turned over to the state to be used exclusively for fishing and hunting. In fact, all those who take out licenses are banded together on the order of a private club, except that all American citizens may become members by the purchase of a self-impose- license. Former Warden Jones has performed his duties as few wardens do, and he has made friends not only of the Idaho boys, but of all who have met him. Conditions have improved under his jurisdiction and Governor Moore had no right to let this good man go when the sportsmen demanded that he be retained. Penalty for Duty. Warden Jones, it appears, has checked up the sheep herders too closely and they have used their political influence to get his scalp. Jones further insisted that every man who carries a gun into the field or hills should have a license,. and also insisted that no man should be allowed to kill game out of season, and he was and is right. If we wish to build up our fish and wild life it takes money, and the person who does not wish to contribute his mite for the support of the department should' not be allowed to carry a gun or fish rod, and above all no game should be killed out of season. It is a well known fact among the boys who go out camping that there are many who live in the hills who claim that everything wild belongs to them, and that the government has no say in the matter. They do not stop to think that everything within the boundary of the Union belongs to the people, and that the people have the sole right to say what shall be done with our public property. A hunter has no more right to go into the hills and kill a deer out of season without taking out a license than he has to fence public lands and sell them without acquiring title to them. Owing to the good work performed by Mr. Jones in Idaho, it would be opportune for the sportsmens organizations of Utah to notify Governor Moore of Idaho that his recent actions do not meet with the approval of the sportsmen. Madsen Plants Fish. The fishing in Utah ought to be better than ever this year. Commissioner Madsen has planted a great many fish in the last two years, and the present year ought to begin showing results. More fish will be planted this year than ever and Madsen will also thoroughly test the planting of eggs in suitable places along the streams. He will find that he can secure good results from this method which has been tested and found not wanting. The planting of fish eggs should be done in the small spring runs which flow into the main streams and which remain clear during storms. The eggs will hatch just as good as they do in the hatcheries and when hatched that is the end of the departments worry, because they take care of themselves. Eggs should be held in the hatcheries until within a week or ten days of hatching and then distributed where they are to bo planted. Such eggs would have a much better chance of hatching than if the eggs were placed in the stream at the time they were taken from the fish. They would have to remain in the stream forty or fifty days and during that time unusual storms might destroy them. When planting egs they can be distributed at the very heads of the streams. Game Birds. Madsen also says that he is going to pay more attention to game birds than ever before, especially to the ducks, with an attempt to lessen the present disease, which is killing off millions every year. Pa- -' Park. The Pacific Coast eLague season will be opened in this city next Tuesday afternoon, April 10, the opening game to be played by Salt Lakt and Portland teams. President H. W. Lane of the Salt Lake team has made every arrangement for the opening game, and a parade, preceded by a band, will lead the baseball fans to the ball grounds. In lining up the ability of the respective players we have a much better team than we had last year, which means that the fight for the top position at the end of the season will be much keener the coming season. At this early stage none of the teams are playing at their best and probably will not be for another month, but at that the boys are in fine condition and can go at top speed if necessary. Salt Lake will play its final game with Seattle at Fresno tomorrow afternoon, and immediately after the game the boys will jump on the train en route here. Molly Quits. Mrs. Molla Bjurstedt Mallory, United States woman champion in tennis singles, has found another woman her superior on the court, and this player is also a French woman. The unknown, y who by victory has become known, is Mile. Vlasco, who is only known at Riviera. She won a hard contest from Molla in straight sets, Mr. and Mrs. Mallory will leave France tomorrow for the United States. interna-ationall- 6-- 6, Shooters' Tournament. ; The Amateur Trapshooting association of America has selected August 20 to 25 for its championship shoot, which will be held at the Chicago South Shore Country club grounds. Lest we forget catfishing is at its best now and the roads are beginning to dry up so that an auto can be driven to any point on Utah lake. Boys returning are reporting big catches, and the weather could not be nicer. Get your license, join the Salt Lake County Game association, and play the game square. The fish and game department needs the money to keep the good work going. If you lie about your worst enemy, no matter how bad he is, you have helped him and hurt yourself. ' BASEBALL LEAGUE TO 9-- 7. - fall. Frank D. Stoop of Spokane, Well- ington, is the president. Headquarters have been established In Chicago. Sharman is the Utah champion. The Utah state championship tournament this year will be held at Ogden, commencing June 3, and according to present indications more trap shooters will enter than at any past year. Logan Sportsmen. The sportsmen of Cache county are up and going and they have a very strong organization. The biggest fisji hatchery of the state is located on the Logan river and beneficial results will be secured in the near future. Fishing in the Logan river has not been very good for the past several years, but with this hatchery working to capacity present conditions can be changed. The Logan river is a very pretty stream to fish and it is one of the largest streams of the state. i!iliiiiililliliiliililllliiliiliillliiiiilllilliilliliiiilliiiiilllllliiilililiiiiliiiiiilllliiiiiiiiis I LIBERTY MOTOR OILS I Best by test for your car.
