The fact Is, Its first occupant was President Adams, who took up his residence there In 1100. The original mansion was begun In In 1814 It was burned by the British and rebuilt In 1818. Another of the errors in the article referred to was the statement that paint Is used on the White House to make It beautifully white. I noticed this esjierlally because I have used considerable paint myself and wondered that "canned" paint on such an important should be us-building when all painters know that pure while lead and linseed oil make the best paint It so happened also that I knew White lead and linseed oil not ready mixed paint were used on the White House, because I bad Just read a book let published by a firm of ready-mixepaint manufacturers who also manufacture pure white load. In that book the manufacturers admitted that for the White House nothing but the beet and purest of paint could be used, and said that their pure white lead had been selected. Two men wart held prisoners inside the new reinforced concrete chimney at a steel plant at Mariners' Harbor, 8. I., for 6 hours the other afternoon. They were on a plank six feet long by two feet wide ten feet from the top of the chimney, which la ICi feet high. Their rescue waa effected after a long struggle by other employes and members of the fire department, who were called to aid In getting the men down. The prisoners on the chimney were Harry Towyne, foreman of the Job. and Conrled Brio!, his assistant Both are exjiert chimney builders. The work bad been practically finished when the men went up to do some cementing near the top. A ladder 168 feet long In section! had been rigged up Inside the chimney. Towyne and Hriol climbed up this at one o'clock. They cemented the top or rim of the chimney, then climbed down to a scaffolding that had been built ten feet below the top, when n small ladder they had used In reaching the top dropped. Towyne and Uriol began to rip up the floor of the scaffolding. They bad ripped up all the timbers but one the largest the centerpiece of the scaffold. They stood on this aa they dropped the last of the other boards. The last plank they dropped didnt go straight to the bottom, but struck on the side of the chimney and, glue lag, crashed heavily into an upright ladder some distance below the two men. The force of the plank snapped tha ladder and the upper half of It tumbled in a heap below. The two men found themselves marooned high Up with only a plank two feet wide to stand on. They cried for help for what seemed to them days.
