Show l GoithEt OF AMY W R Hocking Marries Second Sec-ond Wife Too Soon FIRST WIFE SALT LAKE GIRL Mrs Winnie Hocking1 Returned Last Evening from British Columbia Where She Testified Against Her Former Husband Before She Secured Se-cured a Divorce from Him Ho Married Mar-ried a Girl at Crnnbrook B C Sentenced to Penitentiary for ThreeYears Sirs Winnie Hocking and Parley P Christensen returned last night from Nelson J3 C where they had been for ten days as witnesses In the case of Regina vs W R Hocking a case for bigamy Hocking was charged with marrying a woman named Jean Montgomery Mont-gomery at Cranbrook B C while he had a wife living In Salt Lake Mrs Winnie Hocking The defendant was convicted and sentenced to serve three years In time Provincial penitentiary at Victoria Hocking lived in Austin Nov where his parents still reside Pie was married to Miss Winnie Ruth in this city February 21 1S95 and they lived for about two years at Austin when Mrs Hocking left him and returned re-turned to Salt Lake Mr Christensen secured a divorce for her In this county coun-ty last September Hocking married the second women after an acquaintance acquaint-ance of en days in January last and she was the complaining witness in the case It developed that In a fit of anger Hocking told her that she had no claim on him and Investigation resulted in the filing of the suit Mr Chrlstensen was called to testify as to the laws of marriage and bigamy in Utah and Mrs Winnie Hocking went from hereto here-to testify taking one of her children Her straightforward and modest bear ing as a witness drew forth from Judge Walkam who presided at the fall assizes as-sizes in Nelson a fine tribute and he even went so far as to prevent the at tornv for tho dftfonsn frnm ernsSnuC5 tioning1 her at length saying he had not seen such an excellent witness ota ot-a long time and was convinced she had told the truth and all of It The de fence tried to prove that Hocking be lieved the first wife had secured a divorce di-vorce before he married the second one but failed and the conviction tel lowed his own mother being one of thc main witnesses against him Hocking m4de an eloquent plea for clemency biil 19 no avail Mrs Hocking has hiJiHy friends and relatives here and sinfre leaving her husband has been supporting herself by working ax a professional nurse She Is highly esteemed by all who know her In Salt Lake Mrs Hocking and Mr Christensen unite in expressing appreciation of the courtesy shown them by the people of Nelson especially the court officers I Mr Christensen expresses great admiration I ad-miration for the efficiency of the Constables Con-stables of British Columbia The chief I Constable of the province appoints all deputies many of whom are college graduates H W Webster thc present Chief Constable expects to be In Salt Bake soon en route to New York to receive prisoner |
