Newcomb. Arthur God of Commonsense, I give Thee thanks for the heavy blows of pain that drive me back fromforperilous stingways in harmony with the laws of my being; striving whips of' hunger and cold that urge to bitter and roughfor and steepness achievement; glorious ings ness of the way and staunch virtues gained by climbing over jagged rocks of hardships and stumbling through dark and pathless sloughs of discouragement; for the acid blight of failure that has burned out of me all thought of easv victory and toughened my sinews for fiercer battles and greater triumphs for mistakes I have made, and the priceless lessons I have learned from them ; tor his-- : illusion and disappointment that have cleared my visio and spurred my desire; for strong appetites and passioni and the power they give when under pressure and control : for my imperfections that give me the keen delight of striving toward perfection. God of common good and human brotherhood, I give Thee thanks for siren songs of temptation that lure and entangle and the understanding of other men they reveal; for the weaknesses and failings of my neighbors and the joy of lending a helping hand ; for tny own shortcomings, sorrows and loneliness, that give me a deeper sympathy for others; for ingratitude and misunderstanding and the gladness of service without other reward than self expression. S. What To Have For Thanksgiving Dinner (An inexpensive menu) By Mrs. Frank Wentz. Littledale Written for Parents Magazine 1. Orlando Jolley, Grandview, icott Taylor, Lake View. I, lake There, has been a good leal of the ust few' discussion during obedience how strict about years their from should require parents children. Some have insisted that a child should never be forced to do anything he doesnt wish to, for that might hamper the growth of his indiuduality; and some have argued that the most rigid control must be exercised over the growing child in order to mold his development along constructive lines. There are dangers in both exv tremes. Discipline should follow' a plan that looks farther than the present moment. It should be a continuous prepares process that continually the child to take more and more responsibility on himself. Interpreted in terms of everyday living, you will find obedience absolutely necessary in connection with the daily routine of the childs living. He is expected to eat at certain intervals, to attend to toilet needs, to dress or be dressed, to take a cap and go to bed and to come when you call him for these routines. This obedience must be prompt, unquestioned, and without fuss. For the rest of the time, provided you see that he has a safe and childlike environment in which to play, he can be left to do pretty much as he pleases; The less he is The interfered with the better. times when he needs to obey are the times when his routine needs to be followed. In fact, routine is the very practical framework on which to build early discipline. If the routine is regular the child soon becomes familiar with it and, happily enough, begins to enjoy it. There is a reassuring sense of security for the young child in having the same things happen at the une lime each day, and he derives a glow of pride from knowing what comes next and doing it. When he and he does reaches this point much sooner than many parents realize he has made the first step toward taking over his share of responsibility for his own conin other words, he is tast-i- n duct the joys of self discipline. The wise parent will encourage him to go on to increased Responsibility as he shows himself ready for it. But what of those times when, for example, you tell a child not to and he does it? At do a thing those times ask yourself whether your request was a reasonable one not merely from your point of view but the childs as well. Was it one lie could in all obey or were circumstances such that he was practically forced into the position of refusing to do so perhaps because his friends were looking on, perhaps because he was gone so far he couldn't go back, his desire to do or because the thing was so great that he was willing to defy you? Analyze the whole situjion so that next time you can do your thinking before you speak. Then you won't make the mistake of asking for the imunless life or the safety possible of Olliers depends on it. Then when you have ordered something done, stick to your guns and see it through. Children have a wholesome regard for adults with the courage of their convictions. In the long run, whether you get obedience when obedience is due from your children depends on the kind of person you are. If you and aje a reasonable, understanding in othhuman being- er words, truly adult you will ask for obedience only when necessary and you will get it. Because the kind of person you are will sound in your voice and command your childrens respect. And because (and this is a tremendously important though little recognized fart) children want to obey. The normal child wants to live in an orderly world, wants to feel the approval and love of those around him. And one way to accomplish this is to be obedient.
