"Oh sure, I've threatened to quit every day, but I always come back. There's just something about the store." John and Alice observed their anniversary quietly saying they didn't want to make a celebration out of it. Alice admits that she got kind of confused and was going to celebrate last year. "The kids made a huge card for us, but then I realized it wasn't until 1988, so we told them to keep the card and send it next year." Following their temple marriage, they spent the first night of their honeymoon at the Temple Square Hotel, but then John had to hurry back home because the "mums needed to be planted." At that time the family owned floral business, too. "I spent my honeymoon back at the greenhouse planting mums," Alice said. They plan to make up for that interrupted honeymoon by spending a week in California this summer. "We're going to leave around the fourth of July and visit our friends down there," Alice said. The couple became parents of one son and two daughters, David, Nan and Betty, and they are now grandparents to seven and have four great grandchildren. John and Alice have both worked at the store and have involved their children in all aspects of the business. Alice's artistic touch is apparent in every department. She recently cleaned and the "dish room" by creating new settings for the beautiful sets of china and glassware available. Because of their dedication and love for the store, they create magic for every holiday. Local children will never forget the fairyland the store becomes at Christmastime, and the same is true Easter, and any other special occasion. Alice and John have also devoted much time to their church activities. They left the store in charge of their children and served an LDS mission in Texas, and both have held teaching and leadership positions in the various church auxiliaries. Alice teaches art at community school classes, and John served many years as a volunteer fireman. They have also been members of the Lehi Chamber of Commerce and other civic organizations. Alice was a member of the Lehi Hospital Board for many years, and loves to tell her memories of the hospital and it's personnel. John and Alice have tried to maintain the "down-home- " quality of Broadbents Store. They still cover buttons, frame pictures and sell gardening supplies. Services that the store has performed since it's beginnings 100 years ago. John, a native Lehian, and Alice, from Provo, met while Alice was visiting her sister, Eva and her husband, Morris, in Lehi. Eva and Morris made her join the Fifth Ward Choir which Morris directed, and it was there that Ruth Jones introduced her to John. . .Part .of their courting was done in a Model A Ford with a rumble seat, and some of their escapades included stealing watermelons that turned out to be squash. John's rumble-sea- t action was promptly discontinued after he backed into the store and pushed the door in. Alice and John became partners for life 50 years ago and they've been a team, pulling together through all the good and sad times that a good marriage provides. "Eva and I couldn't sing a note, but I'm sure glad Morris made me join that choir," Alice said. of Halloween, LHS Music Department to present concert tonight The Lehi High School Music will present their Department annual Spring Concert tonight. Inevitably, other people catch on to the fact that they stretch the truth on a regular basis; they may even be branded as liars. Generally, exaggeration is an attention-gettin- g mechanism that may have been ingrained from an early age. It is often seen in people who are the product--o- f large families or of impersonal households. For a child, exaggerating is a way of attracting attention to a story, of being noticed. Unfortunately, if these exaggerations are ignored, or go unchallenged, the child tends to continue the pattern. The other side of the coin is a lack of People who habitually exaggerate have come to believe deep-dow- n that the truth is not good enough. Some people can never tell the right time, quote the right price, or even give the right temperature; they always make it sound as if they worked longer, paid more, or braved more cold. Over time, however, these claims backfire; instead of gaining respect, they cost. If you find yourself unable to break this pattern, the intervention of a professional therapist may be necessary. Together you can work on the reasons behind your exaggeration and, most importantly, may regain a sense of value in truth and in yourself.
