Show A "Non Jsst" Scoundrel Facts have recently come to light which proves one of Utah's old residents resi-dents a swindler and a scoundrel; and although the man has not, for years, bome an unsullied, reputation for honesty, few believed him capable 0 the deed which he is now shown to be guilty of. We refer to one E. W. Van Etten, one of the early settlors in this valley. He has for some time been engaged in sheep raising at West Jordan, waere ke kept sheep ' on shares" for people. In this way be had collected a large herd from various parts of the Territory, people entrusting him with the care of the sheep, and he agreeing to return to their owners a stipulated proportion of the wool and increase. Van Etten disappeared a few days ago, when it was discovered that he had disposed of the sheep, leaving the owners to "whistle" at their loeses, and without a chance of recovering recov-ering anything. Besides this swindle, a large number of creditors have been "bilked." The amountwhich he owes and the value of the sheep he has disposed of cannot, of course, be estimated esti-mated aa yet, but is is known to be upwards oi $10 000. Van Etten left a portion of his family, but one of his wives, it is thought, was cognijant of his swindle, and has gone with him; at any rate, she departed a few days after he was missing, and has not since been seen or heard from. |
