Stone Drug On Main Street of Spanish Fork, you can get what residents agree is the best burger in town. Stone Drug, located on 159 North Main is, according to owner Mike Stone "a dying breed", a place where you can come in and they know you by name. You sit down at the fountain bar, have a burger and a shake, fill your prescription, and chat with the other regulars. Stone Drug was established in 1960. Stone is a second generation pharmacist who took over the business in 1989. In 1976, Stone's father bought out Magleby Drug which was also a restaurant. "It was actually a restaurant, and he just had the idea to put a pharmacy in it. That's how it evolved," Stone said. In 1976 they moved next door into the old J.C. Penny building which was three times as large as the building they'd been in. They closed the restaurant down at that point, and put in the fountain as well as a gift section. "There's no money in the fountain," Stone said, It's just to attract people in. People come in for lunch and have their prescriptions filled." And apparently it fills its purpose. People in Spanish Fork know Stone burgers are in a class all by themselves. "They just have the greatest flavor. It's all about the grill, it's been there for years," said Matt Barber, who would eat lunch there at least once a week before his doctor put a stop to it, I f they took that old grill out it would ruin it. It's the burgers, the fries, the fry sauce—there's just something HIAIRIMIAICIY Do Your Best is sponsored by: Peterson Refrigeration and Appliance 550 South Main, Gunnison * 528-3365 azette Mike Stone filling prescriptions. And they're not kidding. Stone said they deliver for free, including emergency hours late at night. "We don't turn anyone away," Stone said. Mike Stone is really the heart of the place. 1 get to wear two hats," he said, "I'm'a health professional, but also a businessman. And an accountant, a janitor, a plumber. I guess everyone wants to be their own boss." Stone said his main goal is to make enough money to pay his employees. "We hire a lot of kids," he said, "Let them come work here, get a feel for what the job market is. Then they go out into the real world and realize I'm pretty easy on them." Stone said he doesn't see his place still being around in 10-15 years. It'll be gone," he said, It's a dying breed. I get letters every day from chains that want to buy me out." Stone said he does have a son on a mission right now who is planning to go to pharmaceutical school who might want to take it over. I f that's his choice, it's fine," he said. "Stone Drug is one of the last of its kind," Barber said, "It's one of the things that makes Spanish Fork great, the ice cream and shakes, the burgers, the ladies who have worked there since I was in high school, and the swivel chairs there at the bar, the whole ambience of it. It's one of the only things left standing against the whole commercialization of America." Subscribe to the Gunnison Valley Gazette, Your Hometown Newspaper! Call 528-5178 STEAK SUDWICH FISHBURGB?
