Show Society Thursday, July 27, 2006 Obituaries First Birthday Tom Clark Derex Winn Thomas Fred Clark, 48, passed away June 27, 2006 in Pleasant Grove, leaving all his sorrows and disappointments behind and taking all the joys and happy memories ,*ne experienced here with him. Tom was born on November 27, 1957 to Wallace George and Alice Leoda Fredrickson Clark in Gunnison. He married Corrine Hopfenbeck September 15, 1984. They were later divorced. Tom graduated from Gunnison Valley High School and attended Snow College. Over the years, he worked as head mechanic at Tom John Chevrolet, co-owner of R&T Auto, mechanic for Sanpete County, and at the time of his death, was in technical support at Convergys in Orem, where clients would wait for Tom to assist them with their computer problems rather than let anyone else assist them. Tom was a wonderful father, husband, brother, son, uncle and neighbor. Rare were the occasions where you just saw Tom and his four sons, it was Tom, his four sons and boys who were fatherless that he included in their fun. Tom supported his sons in all their activities, regardless of the distance he had to travel, he was there for them. Tom is survived by his four sons: Brandon, Orem; Kevan, John and Michael, all of Centerfield; his mom, Alice Clark, Nephi; sisters: Linda (Jim) Garrett, Nephi; Carma Gregerson, Willard; and a brother, Carl (Saundra.) Clark, Weston, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his father and a niece, NaCole Gregerson. Funeral services were held July 1, 2006 in the Centerfield First Baptist Church. The family of Tom Clark would like to thank everyone who assisted the family during this terrible time in our lives; for the floral offerings and words of comfort. To Dr. and Mrs. Von Pratt for providing the luncheon after the services and the other food that was given to us. We'd also like to thank all the good people who have visited our mom in the hospital following her stroke, as well. This is truly a choice valley! If you would like to call mom, 435-623-1238. Games for the younger people were played before dinner. The Axteil Young Women were in charge of the games. Dinner was then served by the Axteil Activities Committee. After dinner there was a short program, with Elwood Sorenson giving the history of some of the names of the roads and places on Willow Creek. Some of the flats are named after families that would take their families and livestock, milk cows and such and graze them in the higher canyon flats where more feed was available and cooler for the women and children. Once a week the butter and cheese would be brought down by the older children or farther to trade at the local store for supplies that had to be bought. From the history of Axteil: In 1878 the Willow Creek people were called to build a sawmill on Mill Creek in Willow Creek Canyon. Red pine timber was of such excellent quality that it was worth the extra cost to haul it to Manti to be used in the temple. This year, the Willow Creek Pioneer Walking Stick was presented to Leland Sorenson. He has lived in Axteil all of his life until recent years when he sold his farm. Leland married a Redmond girl, Donna Vee Jensen. They have one son, Steve, who lives with his family in Kanab. Congratulations to Leland who is quite a person, who is always helping family and friends and sharing from his garden. Thank you to the activity committee, the young women and everyone who helped in any way, and by coming and enjoying the party. It was a lovely evening in the mountain setting to pay a tribute to our pioneer heritage. Past Axteil pioneer recipients are Dean Anderson, Elwood Sorenson and Richard Cowley. Welcome to Jessie and Para Sterling and young daughter to Axteil. They have bought the Tad Lee home. Axteil will be losing a long time building, the Axteil Ward Church, with the building of a new one starting the first of August. The old building was built around 1910 and used as a school and church building. In later years, the school was moved to Centerfield and the building used for the church. This history information has been compiled from the Church History files and by Phyllis Cowley for the Relief Society Sesquicentennial, 1917 to 1992. Matilda Bundesen Whitlock was called as the first Relief Society President of the Axteil Ward in 1917 and served until her death which was May 30, 1929. The councilors were matilda Jensen and Secretary was Johanna Olsen. These sisters were instrumental in getting the first piano and first chairs in the ward. Other duties they were called to do was go into the homes and care for the sick, wash and lay out the dead, make the burial clothes and arrange to have someone sit up at night with the dead body, keeping ice around it and preserving it as nicely as possible until the burial. They also were responsible to collect the Sunday eggs and receive the Relief Society wheat. Sister Whitlock was the mother of 11 children, one stillborn. Her children never remember seeing their mother In a short dress. She always wore a long dress with a tie apron that was always fresh and clean. If anyone has a special remembrance about the Axteil Ward Church, please contact me at 528-3309 so we can collect as much history as possible. I have collected quite a lot of the older Axteil history and would like to add anything you forward to me to add to what I have. I have worked on the history off and on for many years and some day hope to get it all complied together.
