I and wanting to take our pictures. It's a great feeling to know that you're liked and that you've got a little respect." Respect and admiration might well be the dominant attitude toward the band everywhere it travels. Interestingly, members of the band note that students at SUSC are far less interested in the Scarlet and Black. "I don't think the band gets credit for what it does. There are a lot of people in the music department and on campus who think the band is just a joke. They don't take it seriously or take us serious for what we do," says Joey Leyva. "Just because we play a lot of the same music, because that's what is required of us, doesn't mean we don't know what we're doing, or that it doesn't take time or effort on our part to do it. "We just wish people would realize what we're doing takes time and it takes a lot of work, instead of saying 'the band is just a band, we'll let it go at that'." His wife Chelle expresses similar feelings. "If they could see us at these highland festivals and feel the atmosphere then they would understand." Band Vice President Scott Hammer, an Band members are justified in their feelings that many students at SUSC do not understand or appreciate the band. One student commented, "I've been here for three years, and every time see them they play the same song. Why don't they ever do anything?" Another said, 'I don't really have an opinion of them. never listen to them." "People here expect us to be a field show band, to be out there jumping up and down and doing 'figure eights' on the field during halftime, or during basketball games to come out and play fight songs and all that crap. We're not that type of band," explains Crowther, "Our band is a dignified, prestigious ceremonial band. think it takes us up to a higher level so we've got to play the part." No matter what the opinion at SUSC or abroad, The Scarlet and Black has developed its individuality and earned its reputation for excellence. "It represents SUSC very well, and its best years are yet to come," Sherratt says. "I believe this band can go anywhere and do anything it wants. It has that potential."
