In congress, legislation that would preserve this land, Americas Red Rock Wilderness Act ( HR 1500 ) continues to gain support, with a record 140 cosponsors in the House and 12 in the Senate. That legislation is based on the work done over 12 years ago by concemced citizens of Utah, who went out onto the land to identify what wilderness was left to save. However, over those years, growth, development, and missuse by off road vehicles have forever changed the land, and the time had come for a fresh look at what remained. For the last two years, the Utah Wilderness Coalition has been conducting the most exhaustive, detailed inventory ever attempted in the United States. The inventory was done for three reasons: (1) to remove any areas which in the ten years since the first inventory was completed had lost their wilderness characteristics; (2) to compile documentation so thorough and complete that no one could credibly claim that the lands within our inventory were unqualified for wilderness designation; and (3) add areas that were omitted the first time around, in orger to make the final inventory more completely represent the spectacular geographic and biological diversity Utah posseses.
