Show Progress, February THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 25, 1990 - Page 25 Cable TV has something to offer homes, schools By ANTON GARRITY Herald Staff Writer Cable television will continue to offer its wide variety of commercial programming to allow the cust, tomer plenty of quality entertainment, according to a Provo cable company spokesman. . Over the past several years, ca-- . ble television has seen major changes program wise, said Vicki "Jo Hansen, General Manager of TCI Cablevision of Utah. "Our biggest concern right now is laying enough cable to adequately serve the amount of new customers we've been getting," said Hansen. Almost all of the areas in Provo are now set up to receive cable. One of the programs that TCI currently has and is planning on elaborating in the '90s is complimentary cable to schools which are located in existing cable areas, said Hansen. TCI and other cable operators have put together this program which is called the TCI Education Project. It is designed for specific low-cos- use in classrooms and can be viewed without the commercials, she added. The program was set up to compliment the teachers and not to take over what they are already doing. The television programs that are mostly being used are CNN Newsroom and the Discovery channel. Another program provided to the schools is the Express Exchange computer information service, said Hansen. TCI provides the necessary software to the schools free of charge. "New and innovative cable programming will be seen at an even greater extent in the next few years," Hansen said. "When cable was first introduced, it was subscribed to as mainly a reception improvement, now it's for the entertainment value and because it's such a deal." TCI is trying to better serve the customer by requiring all employees to take a customer service course. "We're a business which puts the customer first," said Hansen. There are currently 23 basic channels provided by TCI and four premium channels which are; Disney, The Movie Channel, Showtime, and Home Box Office. "We try to diversify our program carriage so there's something for everyone," she added. Parents who would like to subscribe to a premium channel but are concerned with children watching that channel without any adult supervision can now do so with a parent control device. This device is available to the public and is operated by a key which the parent has full control over. The shows can't be seen without the box being turned on, said Hansen. The newest change in programming will be the Jazz Cable station which has recently been changed to the Prime Sports Network. Aside from Jazz basketball games PSN will soon carry additional regioi'il sports games. Flow-Thr-u Herald PhotoTrent Nelson Under dust-fre-e working conditions, a Signetics employee uses equipment in the fabrication area of the plant. Signetics changes to stay competitive By JOSEPHINE ZIMMERMAN Herald Staff Writer "We feel very good about the things that have happened to Signetics in the past year. With the new direction President Jim Dykes has given us, we believe future Signetics has a long-terhere in Orem," Neil Bullock, Orem plant manager, said. Signetics moves into the new decade in Orem with new equipment and the capability of fabm ricating ucts. The state-of-th- e Orem art prod- plant, which years ago, has here 23 been the most successful plant in the corporation, both assembly and in fabrication, Bullock said. "This plant has done what the company wanted it to do." He said until recent months, the company had not done remodeling at the Orem plant. The company fabricated wafer technologies on three-inc- h wafers, "but the world has h moved into four and wafers. " t year we realized sales were going down on products made in Orem. People wanted newer products. We had the newest technology, but no place to build it," Bullock said. He noted that the corporation is looking at some realignment, and when the new president took over in Sunnyvale last year, he outlined some new goals. Bullock said he and his staff had met with corporation officers to review one proposal to consolidate the Sacramento military plant into the Orem plant. "That consolidation could have moved either way, but the decision was made to close the Sacramento plant and move all the equipment here," he said. The equipment transfer Ixan in September, and the last of the equipment was moved to Orem Dec, 15. Bullock said he had an appropriation request for $4 million to remodel one portion of the plant and get it into operation. All military assembly for the corporation is now bring done in Orem, opened very-muc- six-inc- "I-as- had 80,000 square feet of unused space in the plant, and we took about 20,000 square feet of that finished to allow for the expansion." Bullock said they told workers in Sacramento that there would be jobs for them in Orem, if they wanted to make the move, but only a few came. He said no additional people were hired at the Orem plant because people were moved into new jobs to handle the Sacramento consolidation portion. "We had to move two wafer fabrication areas in the plant, and we combined them into one large area, called FAB 21. The fabrication area in the Sunnyvale plant (FAB 15) was also closed and all the equipment moved up here to replace the old FAB 9 three-inc- h equipment with new. We did a four-inc- h conversion there." Bullock said they totally remodeled the fabrication area, from removing the floor tile right up to the ceiling. The cost was around $15 million, all of which was contracted locally. He said the corporation request for remodeling and upgrading was for $33 million, and approximately $20 million was spent locallly. "The rest of the improvement was from equipment moved in." "Because of this new technolwe can now ogy we call HS-bring new products and redesigned products soon as technology for the Bipolar integrated circuits. This should put us in the forefront for years to come," he said. He reported the plant has g done a lot of and trimming by combining two fabrication areas into one, and by upgrading equipment and remodeling. He said the headcount has been reduced by 300, which was necessary in order for the plant to remain competitive. They now have 1.200 employees, "Our design center is now working with new designs to no with I he new technology. We feel very good about things here, and the company feels good about our future," he said. "It's in operation.
