Show WE W E HAVE had many versions of the Bible of varying merit and popularity but now we are to have one which promises to be more accurate and at the same time of greater educational value than any of its predecessors This translation is to be he directly from the revised Hebrew and so arranged that the relation of its parts can be readily recognized Paul Haupt Professor of Oriental Languages and Literature at Johns Hopkins University was the first to propose that such a translation tion be made He has enlisted the aid of of leading leading leading lead lead- ing professors of Oriental languages and literature in universities of Europe and America and one book of the Old Testament has been assigned to each professor The work of translation is isnow isnow isnow now being done and a volume containing containing contain contain- ing a portion of the Old Testament will soon be published This will be really a University Bible and it is hoped that it will find a place in the curricula of universities President President President dent Eliot of Harvard in a recent adt ad- ad t I r M 1 1 4 dress is reported to have made the statement that in the future a knowledge of the Bible and religion must be taught in the university and that this is as essential as a knowledge of science and philosophy One cause of much controversy now carried on concerning the relation of the Bible to modern philosophy is that many many men who have completed exhaustive tive courses of study in leading universities universities universities have never made a thorough study of the Bible They too often look upon it in its popular acceptation and condemn condemn condemn con con- it unjustly On the other hand many religious teachers know nothing of philosophy and social socia progress and consequently consequently con con- consequently often try to hold people down downto to theories and religious practices that are adapted to prim primitive minds but are wholly to the present state of society Such theologians grow to be dogmatic and as philosophy and science are opposed to dogmatism they imagine that there is great conflict between between between be be- tween these and religion But let the theologian be educated in science and philosophy and the scientist in the Bible and religion and it will be seen that this conflict w was s provoked only by ghosts which haunt mens men's minds wh while e ethey the they are in the darkness of ignorance but which vanish when that darkness is replaced by the light of truth |
