Show ANOTHER PIONEER DEAD William W Galbraith Promoter and Founder of Many Enterprises Kaysville Jan 2A telegram received I re-ceived here today announces the death I of Williamb Wilkie Galbraith which sad event occurred yesterday at 3 1 I oclock at Diaz Chihuahua Mexico j where he and his family have made I their home for the past eight years I I Kaysville was for many years the home of ilr Galbraith and the news i c j WILLIAM L GALBRAITH I of his death received with profound sorrow by his former business assoc ates and friends in this vicinity The deceased was born in Grimsby England of Scotch parents on May 12 1838 In 1854 he came to Utah and the next year took up his abode in Kays ville and for more than 20 years he was one of the foremost citizens of Davis county He was by nature a leader of men and his clear been business busi-ness foresight and impetuous spirit qualified him for the position he occupied occu-pied at various times in many industrial indus-trial enterprises In 1868 he managed a large contract on the construction of the Union Pacific roadbed through Weber We-ber canyon and later he was identified with extensive lumbering and milling industries in Davis and Weber counties coun-ties Perhaps the largest industry of which he was the promoter and founder was the Syracuse salt works in which he later sold an interest to D C Adams of Salt Lake and Hon F J Keisel of I Ogden After disposing of his interest in this business Mr Galbraith removed his family to Mexico and since 1888 he I has been a leading member of the Mormon I Mor-mon colony in Chihuahua During the Mexican rebellion a few years ago his I dominant characteristics as a leader aserted itself and he carried a flag of I I truce into the rebel camp at Ascencion I and succeeded in quieting the turbulent spirit of the insurrectionists for which I I signal service he though a foreigner was honored with the appointment of president of Diaz I I His last illness began eight months j ago diabetes being the cause of his death A Mexican custom makes i imperative I im-perative that a body must be buried the day following a death hence his I I funeral occurred today He leaves 23 children two of whom William 231 I Galbraith side here and Mrs Mary Laycockre i i |
