Show May 25 1995 Page 7 Derral Siggard retires after 38 years at CEU money for a music scholarship "There have been many talented by Kara Railsback staff writer enjoyed my time at CEU my with education have been excityears ing and now I am ready to retire and move onto something new" said Derral Siggard director of the University “I have Center Siggard will be retiring at the end of the quarter after 38 years of teaching music and administering school affairs lie has been with CEU since Previously he taught at Carbon High School as the band director Siggard began at CEU as a band director and instrumental music instructor In 970 he original cdCEU's Seniors Honor Band and conducted it for 22 years Currently he is the director of the University Center which brings programs from other universities to CEU so that students can work on furthering their education beyond a community college level lie is also the coordinator of the Criminal Justice Title III and Distance Learning programs at CEU lie and his wife Janis have worked hard throughout the years to produce annual Christmas programs Honor Band Concerts and recitals for the Sorosis Club in Carbon County The Sorosis Concert has been a major contribution on his part because it raises stu- dents that have come through CEU in the years that I have been here” said Siggard Several have continued on to become prominent music educators Among these arc Wayne Erickson UVSC band director Russell Wilson CEU choir director Jim Muhlslein Monliccllo High School hand director 1968 Mark Bunnell Brian Matuda Craig Bunnell David Donaldson Raylcnc Allied JoAnn Stout Neil Breinholt and Bill Jcwkc I le has noticed some changes in CEU since he has been here “In the 28 years that I have been heie the biggest change that I have recognized is the growth of the school It has been slow but continuous" lie also commented on the new buildings that have been added to the campus When he came to CEU the music building was the newest addition He remembers when the campus athletic department held theirgames in the Armory and now the BDAC has taken its place He has also noticed a change in the population 1 v ' vV ‘Derral Siggard Mark Wilbcrg BYU choir director Michael Siggard BYUllawaii band director James Dart Jr Carbon District band director and John Vanwagoncr Union High Band director Many others have become prominent local professionals but maintain g a interest in music Prominent these would he Richard Dart among life-lon- “Back in June when I first began with the Serving Utah working Network at the College of Eastern Utah didn't know what to expect I did not have a clue what HSUNH was and its purpose I did not know where I would fit in the organization I was familiar I with what my position was as a VISTA worker— to get students involved in community service but beyond that I was at a complete loss It may have taken a little while but eventually I became familiar w ith "SUN" and what ' HealtkPifiess! of students on campus and the di versity among them His plans arc travel recreation and work “I plan to do a lot of jobs around the house that I have put off for a long time We will remain active and productive and enjoy the years to come" he stated I le would like to thank his wife Janis who has played a major part in his success here at CEU lie feels good about his time here and about the students "There has always been a pretty good core of enthusiastic students to work with" I le is excited to move on and enjoy the “Golden Years" He and his wife have five children and seven grandchildren it involves and believe me it goes much further than just providing service to the community on the college and university campuses around the slate we are also providing a service to those who choose to be a part of 'SUN'" said David Litvak le has been a driving force for good this year us CEU's VISTA Volunteer working in the “SUN" Center lilvack peck more than just wood? by Kara Railsback staff writer Do woodpeckers peek more than just wotid?
