(Dgttcu gunctiow. Rival to Pompeii Found. The Mevtie det Deux Mondet gives an aocount of the discovery of a buried oity, older tbn 1'ompeii. It is on Therasia, a small island of tho Greek Archipelago, which with two others form a sort of circular bay. The inner coast presents a series of cliffs, sometimes reaching to the height of 1,300 feet. On the top of these cliffs lies a band of pumice stone of brilliant whiteness. From the summit the land slopes away gently to the open sea, and is everywhere covered with a coating of tulla or pozzulona, at times more than one hundred feet deep. Here and there upon the slopes are scattered populous villages. There is, however, no soil but a friable pumice, the dust of which is raised and carried in eddies by Tery strong winds. This pumice, when duly mixed with lime, produces a bard cement, which has the quality of great resistance to the r. It action of the weather or has, for some time, been exported, and the works at the Suez canal have caused au increased demand for it. In quarrying, the tully hasbeen quite cutthrougii, and boneatu have been found remains of buildings erected by tho primitive dwellers in the islands. The first discoveries were made in Therasia. On the southern face of the islands, between the two capes in which it terminates, are vast open quarries. The works are at the edge of the cliff, and the material is hurled down some 600 feet to the base, whence it is directed by shoots into boats. The workmen have been accustomed not to cut down to the bottom of the stratum, since below a certain level (hey found that the pozxulona was mixed with blocks of stone, which,' besides making it more difficult to work, reduced its value. Those blocks lay in regular lines, and were the crests of walls. There can be no doubt that the buildings were raised to dwell in, and that the pumice which eovered them had never been stirred since it'first fell from'the volcanoes. The principal building uncovered eontains six rooms of various sizes, the largest being twenty by seventeen feet square. One of the walls is carried out so far as to enclose a sort of Court, about twenty-si- x feet long with a single entrance. A smaller building, of one chamber, has been opened close to this, and the erests of several walls in the neighborhood bear witness to the existence of houses still buried. The masonry is quite different from that at present in use on the island, containing neither The walls are pozzulona nor lime. composed ef irregular blocks of unhewn lava, laid one above another; the interstices being filled with reddish colored volcanic ashes. Among the walls are laid in every direction long brandies of olive wood, now for the most part so deoayed that they crumble at the first touch. The object of these was to make the walls less rigid, and so less subject to disturbance from earthquakes. One human skeleton was found; that of a man of middle ago, was doubled up in one corner of the room as if crushed under the weight of the roof when it broke in. Much of his property escaped destruction, and objects of various kinds were there; vessels of earthenware and lava, grain, straw, bones of animals, tools of flint and of lava. There was no trace of metals, not even a nail in the woodwork of the roof. The pottery is of several kinds. Large, yellowish jars, holding sometimes as much as twenty gallons, are the most common. They contained barley, peas, anise, etc. The library of the British Museum now eontains 2,600,000 volumes, and is doubling itself overy fifteen years.
