Show Citizen, Review, Press, Wed., Oct. 19, 1983 Alpine School Dist. students pay less for lunch The prices for school lunch in the Alpine School District are below the averages for school meals in other districts of the state. HONORED-May- American Fork Hospital honors six retirees Six of American Fork Hospital's employees were honored at an open house October 12 with their retirement from the medical facility.. Honored were Vergia Scott, Marjorie Nielsen, Retta Bown, Afton Young, Dorothy Sorenson and Gay Atwood. Malcolm H. Beck, Mayor chairman of the hospital board of trustees, said he was "sad to see such hard working people leave the hospital," and hopes "we can find as efficient and dedicated people to replace them." "I hope your joy in retirement will be as great as the joy you have brought into the lives of so many people through your service to the hospital," he said. Mark J. Howard, hospital administrator, presenting them with a gift of appreciation, told of the "positive influence each of you has had on the hospital." He said the hospital has obtained a degree of long-tim- e maturity due to their work, and thanked them for their many hours of service to the hospital and the patients. Mrs. Scott has been employed at the hospital since November of 1961. They also enjoy and are out each morning doing their four miles. ship-shap- e. g, Mrs. Nielsen has worked at the hospital since August of 1970, working in housekeeping. Born in Nephi, she married Tex Nielsen and they have five children and nine grandchildren. Mrs. Bown has worked at the hospital since June of 1977. She has worked on the surgical floor along with bemg on call and working in the operating room. She is a, marathon bicycler, and rides heri bike everywhere, just recently! f completing a Mrs. Young has worked for the; hospital for the past 12 years,? working as a nurses aide and later on the obstetric floor. She enjoys'; taking trips with the Senior; Citizens, she says. Mrs. Sorenson began work at the hospital in July of 1967, working in the laundry. On a given day, her coworkers say, she has been known to walk up to five miles within the hospital. "f Mrs. Atwood has been with thei hospital for 29 years. A dedicated employee, she began working in the, operating room, which she updated. After many years there, she was asked to establish the Quality Assurance Department, which she did and continued on until her recent retirement. average for school lunch at the elementary level is 76 cents while the elementary price in the Alpine School District is 70 cents. At the secondary level the average price in the state is 87 cents while Alpine District charges 80 cents. "We have consciously tried to keep our prices down," said Leath Stratton who supervises school lunch for the district. "This is a difficult task in light of increased costs for food commodities and employee salaries. We implemented cost saving measures this year in order to keep our prices the same as last year." Nine districts in the state raised school lunch prices at the beginning of this school year. The. highest price for an elementary lunch is charged by the Rich and Sevier districts which charge $1. Rich School District charges the highest price for school lunch at the secondary level with a $1.25 fare. Two districts, Sevier and Iron, charge $1.10 for a secondary meal; while three others, Duchesne, Uintah and Beaver, charge $1 at the secondary level. The lowest price for an elementary school lunch is 60 cents which is charged by Salt Lake, Juab and Grand school districts. Salt Lake District charges the lowest in the state for a secondary lunch at 65 cents. Provo District in Utah County charges 75 cents for an elementary lunch and 85 cents for a secondary meal. Nebo District, also in Utah County, charges 80 cents and 90 cents for its elementary and secondary lunches. Dorothy M. Edwards named A.F. Hospital's Employee of the Month a M. Edwards, Dorothy registered nurse at American Fork Hospital, has been named Employee of the Month at the hospital. A nurse on the medical floor, she also works in the Emergency Room and is a member of the American Fork Ambulance Association. Mrs. Edwards has served on the Medical Floor Committee and the Policy and Procedures Committee. She is a graduate of Weber State College School of Nursing, and is described by her as being "very conscientious and works well with others on the floor. She is always striving to do better; always has the best interest of the patient in mind; and is always happy and cheerful." She works on the ambulance crew along with her husband, Charles, e along with her position at the hospital. She also fills in in the Emergency Room whenever she can.
