Show Heart Attack Fatal ToJohanAJohnson Johan August Johnson, a highly respected pioneer of Gunnison, passed peacefully away at his home on East Center street Monday night at about 11 o'clock. He suffered a sudden heart attack, which causd his death. His wife was alone with him when the end came. Mr. Johnson had suffered some trouble, but Monday afternoon he was downtown and after he went home he ate a hearty supper and at 10 o'clock he retired. Mrs. Johnson soon followed and after a lapse of 20 minutes or more Mr. Johnson gave a gasp. His wife spoke to him and after receiving no answer turned him partially par-tially over only to find that he was dead. Mr. Johnson was born at Hemsjo, Sweden, Octobpr 24, 1858, and was the son of John and Christina Johnson. While a young man in his native land he followed the profession of horticulture horti-culture and various occupations. He yearned for new fields and in 1890 he came to America, leaving his wife and) daughter and a mother-in-law in Sweden. He settled in Utah and took up mining, working at Alta and Mercur. When he had saved sufficient suf-ficient funds he sent, for his family and later settled in Gunnison. Mr. Johnson has been a familiar figure since coming to the valley, and was among those whose efforts were to make the city beautiful. He helped in the erection of many of the earlier homes and stressed in making the homes beautiful by planting shrubbery, shrub-bery, gardens and beautiful lawns. Later he engaged in farming, but retired re-tired some eight years ago. Honest, upright in all his dealings, Mr. Johnson John-son won hosts of friends who will grieve his untimely death. Besides the widow, Mrs. Ida Johnson, John-son, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Villard and Mrs. Ruth Westlund of Gunnison, and one son, Herbert Johnson, of Salt Lake, twelve grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren great-grandchildren are also among the survivors. sur-vivors. Funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian chapel Friday afternoon after-noon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be at the Gunnison City cemetery. |
