Washington: The title of a bill people know that the one pushing hardest for abortion-on-demahas always been the feminist who advocates the fatal abuse of the preborn child under the banners a woman's right to privacy", a womans right to control her reproduction". They have listened to her contradictory statements about the homemaker-mothe- r role: she says a woman may choose any career she wants, but her words show she thinks a woman can find fulfillment only by working outside the home, in a salaried position. Pro-lif- e people are skeptical of the push for the Equal Rights Amendment, since the Equal Employment Opportunities Act of 1972 seems completely extensive in its guarantee of equal pay for equal work. They have listened to feminist rhetoric at ERA rallies and are not surprised to hear abortion-on-deman- d mentioned in the same breath with the ERA, if passed, will repeal any and all laws protecting the preborn child not wanted by his mother and symbolize, as Attorney Charles E. Rice has said. Easy Rampant Pro-lif- e nd Now Utah feminists are gearing up for a State Meeting in Salt Lake City June 24th and 25th, at which participants will vote on such issues as abortion and the Equal Rights Amendment. Organizers say they want u'omen from all backgrounds to attend, so that the opinions relayed to the National Convention will be truly representative of the women of Utah. I think we should take them up .on it! Lets (ill the Salt Palace with people who believe a womans first and essential right is her right to be born. They havent seen the grant, the enabling legislation...nothing. Anyone in the hotel, motel, resort, campground or restaurant business will want to be alerted to this legislation as well as every Sen. James A . McClure often means more than what the legislation does. There was the Protection Consumer Agency (who could possibly oppose consumers?) and there was the Child Development bill (would anyone dare oppose a bill that alkgedly assists children?). Now we have something called the Voter Registration Act (who could be against registering people vote to are you wondering?). And to put icing on their cake, Carter the administration calls it part of its election reform" package. Well, who would want to oppose election reform? Im trying to get them to give this bill a more appropriate name the Voter Fraud Act. After all. Im ready to ask, who favors fraud? No one does, of course. And yet this bill would place a cloud over all federal elections by permitting individuals to present themselves at a polling booth and be permitted to vote upon presentation of the flimsiest sort of identification. We are all concerned about voter apathy, and I have been very vocal in pointing to the low turnout of voters in our elections. But apathy is caused by the peoples disillusionment with public officials with their and Many feel that their government. one vote just wont make a difference." te Proponents of legislation claim it will increase voter participation and will not promote voter fraud any more than the current system. It seems to me that voter fraud could not be prevented under this system, but rather the opportunity for fraud would be enhanced. This move would encourage last minute mass roundups, by special interest crusaders, to push uninformed voters to the polls. Identification for registration would be by drivers license or some other similar form of register-as-you-vo- identification which would establish proof of identity and residence. We are all aware, I am sure, of the ease at which one can obtain false identification papers, and it would make it just that much easier to promote voter fraud. For instance, it is perfectly legal to hold drivers licenses from two states at the same time, in many parts of the country. The implications of voter fraud are enormous. From American history we remember the Kansas" incident. Bleeding Voters crossed state lines to stuff ballot boxes with votes both for and against admitting Kansas as a free or slave" state. Small population states stand to lose when people from larger states might be tempted to set up temporary residencies in small states just long enough to sway the vote to their side. Lets not forget the original intent of voters. It was enacted to prevent widespread election tampering and fraud taking place in our country. Not only will there have to be more personnel at the voting polls, but if there is any indication of voter fraud, the cost of investigating such a dispute could skyrocket as was witnessed with the discrepancy in Louisiana last November. The money for such investigations would come- - from the Federal Election Committee, and ultimately from the taxpayer! The right to vote in this country is probably the most valued expression of our freedom. One need only leave the country for a short time before realizing what a privilege it is to vote. Requiring advance voter registration is not much to ask to protect the integrity of that privilege. |
