Show IS THE PRIMARY A FARCE There must be bo some sound Bound reason for Uta Utah's 1 8 met method od of primary election balloting or it wouldn't be in use But we cant can't imagine what it itis is It seems to us that the primary election in Utah is a farce faree Primaries are designed deigned to allow the voters of each individual political party to choose their favorite candidate candidate candi date when there are arc two or more for the same position to compete against the favorite candi candidate f ate of the opposing pt political party Utah's P primary go does s not do that Apparently it it does doe's s not even intend to do it Because there are arc no party barriers barrie Republicans can vote for Democrats and vice versa In the GENERAL election this is as ns it should be but in the primary it may and nay and often do does lead does lead s-lead lead to disgraceful disgraceful disgraceful dis dis- graceful conditions Lets Let's take a hypothetical case Bill Jones and Jack Smith are Democratic primary opponents for a place on the general election ballot Bill Jones is a weak sister with absolutely no qualifications except personal popular popular- ity Jack Smith is a strong man with every qualification tion The Republican candidate still imaginary remember ber is ber-is is He lie and his think unopposed supporters he can defeat Bill Jones Tones but they arc are doubtful of a victory over Jack Smith And so all the Republicans vote in the primary for forthe forthe the w weak ak sister r. r Their vot votes s overpower o the Democratic vot votes s for the strong trong man And so the w weak ak man appears appearson on the ballot either assuring the Democratic victory or in ease case of a up slip-up the election of a man who has no business in the office This is made po possible sible by br allowing voters from both parties to vote on either party's s candidate The fIhe reme remedy y I is simple Voters should declare themselves when they enter the tho primary polling place The registered an and declared Democrat reechoes receives a Democratic ballot and the same happens happens hap hap- pens pene with the Republican Th There re is no overlapping D' D no scrounging The reme remedy seems to us so simple that w we r cant can't imagine why it it hasn't been beeD adopted s J.
