Tammy Jacques of Park City and Scott Lung of Salt Lake City claimed victories at the Utah State Mountain Bike Championships, held Saturday on Park City Consolidated Mine land near Solamere. Both Jacques Jac-ques and Lung compete primarily in road racing. Jacques, 23, rode to victory in the "Women's Super" division. The 11.4-mile race was her first on a mountain bike. Asked if she prefers mountain biking, Jacques said, "No, not really. This is great for alternative alter-native training a nice mental break." Jacques, who plans to ride her mountain bike in the world championships next month, had a few problems with the course. "I fell once in a switchback and once going uphill, but it was really fun." Cyndi Schwandt and Theresa Williams, both of Park City, finished second and third respectively. In the "Men's Super" division, Scott Lung, 25, completed eight laps (22.8 miles) first, edging Glen 1 H Xl v ml l f t. i 4 . .-. r - ram r?s Tammy Jacques (right) broke "Ladies' Super' division. Lung, like Jacques, received $320 for winning. Ke was delighted to be earning money mountain biking. "If there's money involved and I think I've got a shot at it I'll keep mountain biking. This is my only source of income. I'm a bum right now." Lung felt challenged by the course at Solamere. "The climbing is not real technical," he said, "but some of the descending was technical." Other riders disagreed, citing the lack of steep, winding terrain as an advantage to the road racers. Glen Adams, the men's second-place finisher, said "(The course) is not as technical as it needs to be for me to make up time.. .It was difficult to get away from Scott, since I couldn't make up time on the downhills." Cyndi Schwandt agreed that the course could have been more technical. "I wanted to win," she said, "but the course favors road racers." (The State Mountain Bike Championships, Cham-pionships, sponsored in part by Jans and radio station KZHT, offered competition for a variety of age and skill levels.)
