Show I GOOD ROADS CONCRETE WINS IN INEST TEST EST OF MATERIALS In An interesting road experiment hu has been conducted In for tor the purr pur- pose pOle of ascertaining the facts concerning concern concern- ing the v earing quality of road materials ThIs test road Is 11 known as the Date Bate experImental road rond It consists ot of 63 s coons of pavement each 18 feet wIde and from to 2 O OI feet teet In length They are laid end to end and so that they make a continuous straight two miles long two Twenty of these sections were of brIck 17 of asphalt and 24 of con con- crete In each type of pavement the sections varied In thickness from those so thIn that they were ere sure to break under the lightest test loads to sections sec sec- which were considered stron strong enough to support successfully the heaviest load lond permitted by the state traffic law All of the materials for the pavements pave pave- ments were made to conform to the high standard as required by state specifications and the spirit of the whole test was to learn the facts After Atter this road had been constructed army trucks made round trips over them Each truck was loaded differently as the test progressed esse starting with the tho lightest load possible pos pos- sIble for tor them and gradually increasing increasIng Ing the load until the greatest traffic imposed upon any such was tons Over 50 per cent of this was the legal load limit for tor four tons pelf pe perear rear wheel After the test was com com- It was found that the concrete had stood the test best ot of any material used In fact It was nn an overwhelming vIctory for concrete pavement and thIs can be better understood when It Is given glyen In n percentage Only 4 per percent percent cent ot of the brick pavement sustained this traffic wIthout Injury Only 11 per cent of the asphalt sustaIned thIs traffic whereas 41 3 23 per cent of the concrete sections satisfactorily sustaIned sus- sus tamed the entire test The test willbe will be still further continued this spring and new sections ot of concrete ha e been put down havIn having the edges thIcker thIck thIck- er than the center It will be InterestIng interesting Interest Interest- Ing to note what the outcome of these tests wIll E.
