DAY 2 - BOY’S REGION Among high school basketball aficinados is a saying that, “it is difficult to defeat the same team three times in a season.” Well Tuesday that old saying received a certain amount of credibility in the semi final contest between Wayne and Panguitch. The Badgers had defeated the Bobcats in both of their previous meetings, one in OT, but this day’s donnybrook would favor the Bobcats 45 to 43. Eric Frandsen with 13 and Brooks Leach with 12 were the leaders of the Panguitch attack, while the Peterson boys, Lance with 17 and Tyce with 12 were the big guns for the Badgers. Panguitch and Valley will square off for the Region 15 championship, Wednesday at 7:30. DAY 2 - SEMI FINALS In the biggest upset of the Region 15 season Valley handed Escalante their first region loss in Tuesday’s semi final game, 57 to 47. The Buffalos jumped out to a 9 point lead in the opening quarter and led all the way. Escalante scored one more field goal than Valley, but the Buffs accuracy at the foul line was the deciding factor. Matt Hoyt led the Valley attack with 15, and Dalton Lisonbee’s 17 was high for the Moquis. DAY TWO - CONSOLATION In the consolation bracket, Cade Boyter’s 22 and Dylan Jone’s 17 were instrumental in earning Milford a 66 to 42 win over Bryce Valley. Dusty Ahlstrom led the Mustangs with 11, Chad Mortensen 9, Korde Chynoweth and J.J. Dunham 8 each. In the contest for 3rd and 4th place, Escalante trailed Wayne, 30 to 24 at intermission, but then in the 3rd quarter the Moqui defense took over, blanking the Badgers and outscoring them 25 to 8 in the second half to earn a 49 to 38 win, and a 3rd place finish. Kevin Griffin was huge in the Moqui’s attack with a game high 18 points. Logan McLemore and Tim Hughes chipped in with 12 and 11 respectively. The Badgers accomplished something that no other team has been able to do this season. They limited the Moqui’s vaunted three point attack to just one , by Escalante’s ace, Tim Hughes. For Wayne, Trevor Taylor was high with 14 points. With just 5 seconds left in the game for the 5th place spot, and the score tied at 46, Milford drove the length of the court to score the game winner, a rebound by James Turner on a missed lay up, just at the buzzer. Final score Milford 48 Piute 46. FOURTH PLACE VALLEY CAPTURES REGION CROWN The old saying, “it’s difficult to defeat a team three times in a season,” gained even more credibility as the Valley Buffalos, two time losers to Panguitch in the regular season, outlasted the Bobcats 41 to 39, to earn the Region 15 Champioship. Panguitch outscored Valley from the floor, but the Buffs were more accurate from the charity stripe, popping in 13 in the 4th quarter when the Bobcats were forced to foul for profit. Eric Frandsen had 15 for the Cats, while Trac Norris was held to 11, and Brooks Leach who blocked 7 Valley shots. chipped in with 11 also. Named to the All Tournament team were, Tim Hughes, Logan McLemore and Kevin Griffin from Escalante. Trac Norris and Eric Frandsen from Panguitch. Lance and Tyce Peterson from Wayne. Matt Hoyt from Valley, Tyson Westwood from Piute, and Cade Boyter from Milford. TIM HUGHES OUTSCORES WENDOVER Escalante’s “Bomb Squad,” led by 3 point ace Tim Hughes, who piled in seven long ones, and outscored Wendover 37 to 34, had the range in Tuesday’s play-in game, firing in a total of 15 from beyond the arc, to demolish Wendover 88 to 34. The Moqui’s long range scorers were, Hughes with 7, Dalton Lisonbee with 3, Kace Roundy and Logan McLemore with 2 each, and Ryan Brook with 1. A total of eleven Moquis put points on the board in the decisive win. At Green River, the Pirates jumped out to a 10 point first half lead and were never headed, as they knocked Wayne from tournament play 52 to 46. Tyce Peterson led the Badgers scoring with 16 and Cameron Chappell chipped in with 11. Tyson Westwood’s 18 points led Piute into the tourney with a 43 to 35 win over Christian Heritage. Trailing 19 to 16 at the break, the T Birds defense took command and held the Crusaders to just 3 points in the third quarter. Heath Payton added 11 for Piute and Jaylin Christiansen pumped in three from down town. Dark Horse Milford’s Dylan Jones canned 5 treys in his 23 point total, as the Tigers clawed their way into the tournament with a 61 to 49 win over St. Joseph. Cade Boyter racked up 15 with 1 trey, as the Tigers coasted to the victory So in summation, of the 5 Region 15 teams eligible to gain a State Tournament berth, only 4 were successful, with just Wayne falling by the wayside.
