Show uscniamn uuvjs By Marlene Haws 826-4859 The group that most likely had the largest number here was the Escalante High School Class of 1952. And from all reports they had a fun-filled day on Saturday. First they met at the home of Deon Alvey where they decorated a float to ride on in the parade. At noon they met at the senior citizen "center where they enjoyed a full course roast beef dinner, visited, had a program pro-gram and reminisced until their sides hurt from laughing. Included in this group were: Deon Alvey and Marjie Spencer, Escalante, who were the hostesses; Betty Jean Spencer Dowdell, Provo: Gail and Beth Haney Stott, Richfield; Joe and Rhoda Robinson Allen, Provo; Merrill and Mary Hamilton Hill, St. George; Jerry and Sherree Schow Roundy, Escalante; Mazie Lee, St. George; Dale Reynolds, Provo; Howard and LaNea Munson, Cedar City; Blake Dee and Cora, Lee Robinson, Salt Lake City7; Kent and Phyllis Mclnelly, Hurricane; Ray and Lois Barney, Kaysville; Sherrill and Pat Haws, West Jordan; LaDell and Karen Alvey, Kanab; Jim and Jolyn Spencer, Orem; Leon Spencer and wife (sorry no name was given), Washington state (they got the prize for traveling trav-eling the most miles to get here), and teachers Vermon and Catherine Barney, Panguitch. Shiralee Christensen Pratt and Jerlie Heaps Kay were unable to attend and four of the class members are deceased: Laurel Baker, Deloy Blood, Juana Robinson and Robert Osbom. Shirlene Spencer Cusilito brought her new husband, John, from Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico, to visit with her brother, broth-er, Leon Spencer, while he was this close, and there may have been other family members. Marion and LaRae Allen, Hurricane and Stan and Lahoma Dalton, Circleville, came to visit with Sherrill and Pat Haws and Yukon Norman during the celebration. cele-bration. Betty R. Alvey had some of her family here: Linda Stokes, Riverton: Irene Tait, South Jordan and Tony Alvey, Idaho. I am just guessing that they had part of their families with them. Irene and Linda quilted up a storm while they were here also! Carrie and Cecil Griffin had their daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Troy McMurtrey and family here from Idaho Falls, also Boyd and LaNell Cottam from Cedar City. The Padre Motel, was filled with the family of Dick and Mary Lyman as they were having hav-ing their family reunion. Lewis and Jean Griffin had 41 of their offspring here and, right through the fence, Evan and Lois Griffin Reeves had part of their family here from the Provo area. Kenneth and Marie Griffin had family here to help celebrate cele-brate Marie's birthday and to participate in the celebration. Janet Porter had some of her family here from Provo. It seemed funny not to see Haws with them. Gene and Thais Griffin had their family back again as did Ben and Renee Porter. Brad Liston, St. George, Janet (Bunny) Young, St. George and Lois Houston, West Jordan, were at the Stan Liston home. Lana Lord, LaCanada, Ca. came again on Wednesday to help Stan celebrate his 85 birthday! David and Raylene Whitefield and family, Las Vegas, Nev. and Janeen Duncan and granddaughter, Hailey Snedegar, were visitors at the home of Arnold and Deon Alvey. Sharon Dale Marsh had part of his family here. Also a lady friend, Eve Bybee, from the Salt Lake area. EvaDean Liston had Jim and Lola Alvey, Jimmy and Amy Alvey and family of Mapleton.. Jim and Lola came for Lola's class reunion. The only info I got about the above mentioned reunion was: Valerie Mclnelly Davies and Susie Schow Thurston, Salina, were the hostesses; Marlene Stowe, Escalante; David and Marilyn Liston Griffin, Ariz, and Jim and Lola Alvey were in attendance. There were 13 (out of 19) there and they had it at the Circle D Restaurant. Dwight and Jaleen Liston Vance had son and daughter-in- law Wayne and LaRene Pollock, Calif., and daughter, Cozan Pollock from Colorado. Greg and Debbie Allen had three grandchildren here with them and brought some more of their belongings from Kingston. Clint and Shanna Porter were here from Cedar City and had a long float in the parade. I don't think they have as many kids as there were cars in their float, so they must have borrowed some! By the way, the parade was great. And we enjoyed one of the biggest crowds we've had in a long time. Everything went along smoothly,' except that Sylvia Luker took a fall from one of the floats and sustained some injuries which will require some convalescence. Sorry about that! Babs Neal, Shirley Curley and Diane Alvey came from the Phoenix, Ariz., area. Dianne stayed with MaeVonn Alvey. I'm guessing that Babs and Shirley stayed with Delane and Leah Griffin. The Griffin's also had the families of Jeff and Marilee Miller, Mesa, Ariz. And Val and Ann Haws, St. George. After the "Griffin Shootout" part of the parade, my grandson, grand-son, Brandon Haws, and I went into the Griffin store to shop and Brandon said, "Look, Grandma.! Only in Escalante!" There lay Brent Griffin's gun (which shot blanks) on a box just inside the door. Brent was just getting ready to put it away. We jokingly asked him if he kept that handy for the customers cus-tomers he refused service to and we all had a good laugh! Susan Shurtz recently drove Zak Wilson and Helen Shurtz to Salt Lake City where they met Sara Shurtz Cowles and some of her children to fly to Southern California to visit with Annette Shurtz Mc Cool and her family. They enjoyed some of the local attractions there such as the Queen Mary, Orange County fair, Balboa Beach and the LDS San Diego Temple. I can still put more news in next week about the celebration if you will only report it to me. I can't be everywhere at once! |
